Just changed thermostat and have a question

Featured Replies

I have just had the pleasure of changing the thermostat on my 4x4, read all the threads for how etc (should take no more than 30mins!!!!!!! Yeah, Microsoft Minutes ) I ended up draining the antifreeze as it was very brown. tried several socket sets to get the bottom bolt out and finally did it with an Allen socket which needed much less room. Got some nice new G12 (3 litres) and flushed the system out thoroughly before refilling. Now to the question, I put all the G12 in as I read the system holds 6.8litres so with 3Litres of G12 there will be 3.8litres of water which is somewhere between the 2:3 and 50:50. However, after putting in the G12 I have only managed to get about 3/4 litre of extra water into the system? is this because when flushing not all the water has come out? AND should I be worried?

I ran the engine for a while at 3k waiting for the fans to kick in. It gets to temp OK and the heater in the car is warmer than its been for a while. I did take it for a short run and it has dropped almost to the min marker but I will see if it needs any more topping up in the morning. I just assumed it would need a fair bit of water to top it up.

Can't help you with your problem, however, could you point me at the links for the thermo change guide? Will be attacking this on the wife's car this weekend.

That's normal. some water is still left in the system. That is about as much extra water as i got into the car after i flushed mine, so I would not worry. worth checking the level after a few days though.

Cheers for that. I had guessed that was what was going on, just nice to have someone confirm it   I now have a pair of g12 bottles full of water in the car just in case :D

I was really surprised how crappy the water was when flushing though, loads of rusty bits in it :S
