Turbo Busted

Featured Replies

Agh.... Sent VRS into garage today to have interccoler to turbo pipe checked out and they have said turbo is dead... it still boosts up but can feel the power down but not tons and tons....

How much should i pay for a rebuild / replacement or is it worth a second opinion???

you what a turbo either works or doesnt lol i think there taliking rubbish when a turbo fails you will know about it big time

if the car is still boosting how is it failing??

i think you being taken for a ride mate

tell me more about what they said

I'd definitely get a second opinion. Having just had the boost pipe go on mine, I can see how some places might try to pull the wool. Mind you, the boost pipe was hardly cheap for what it is...!!!

i didn't think it sounded right....it seems like there is a leak.... as its kinda jerky when you put your foot down... he said the turbo bearings have prob gone which is why its whistling like it is and he said it smoked badly on startup...

have got hold of a friend of mine who is going to take it into VW where he works and have a look for me on his day off :) so hopfully might get somewhere...

Only reason i'm inclined to believe him is he knows i wont be sending the work his way i only went today for a quick dignostics and that was wot he said....

My mate who works for Vag said the same as you guys and recons its got to be a pipe somewhere... He said the same place as waht you did and also the garage today said there was no leak under there but i think he was prob looking in the wrong place

now you say the turbo is whistling then he may be correct as this is exactly what mine did a day before it blew up. best thing to do is take the inlet pipe of and look at the blades on the turbo if it was like mine there will be either bent or missing but does now sound like the turbo failure coming in....

i would check all the pipe work but if the guy has worked on turbo cars its a very distictive noise when its fecked

Update... Defo turbo thats gone... no leaks anywhere smoking badly now too :( so far the car is still running but its def on its way ...

How hard is it to get it replaced. I may have access to someones ramps in a garage??? wot would be involved??? Downpipe off and unbolt or a lot more to it???

If i do it from above i'm right in thinging the head has to come off to access it???

I have sort of got the same problem.......... mines done 130K miles

Mine can only be describe as the fan blades hitting the outer casing of the turbo when the turbo kicks in.... Bearings me thinks!!!!

Im, going to be ringing around tomorrow for some prices

not that hard if you have a ramp

diconect intake side pipes

disconect exhaust dp remove oile and coolant lines

remove outlet pipe to intercooler

undo 3 main bolts and out she come

fiddly but not to hard

make sure you prime the new turbo with oil first before you run it up on boost

your looking at for turbo alone

new £550

second hand up to £250

I'd get new oil and coolant lines too, and do an oil change at the same time if I were you.

Turbo's rarely fail by themselves, but it does happen. A pretty common killer is a tiny bit of plastic/paper/foam from the intake system getting sucked into the compressor and sending it off balance. Once it's off balance then obviously the bearings will quickly die, and then the whole thing escalates until it goes bang!

Other things are oil supply, oil drainage and crankcase pressure. All big killers.
