Intermittent power steering

Featured Replies

Hello,

I've got a 2000 16v 1.4 Furby which has had a few niggles, but generally been a very good car. I went down to my local shops the other day and when I got back into it I noticed the power steering warning light was on and the steering was very heavy. Not too chuffed with this I drove home (building up my arm muscles) and set about trying to find the fault.

A few days later after having driven to work (still no power steering) it suddenly came back on again. Since then it's been on and off a few times.

The reservior under the battery still has fluid in it covering the end of the dip stick (although it is close to the end!).

When the power steering is on and you turn the wheel you can hear the motor/pump going, and when it's off - no motor/pump noise.

Any ideas what could be going on here, and any ideas of how i could check it before taking it to the local garage (have given up on the dealer garage as they haven't been too successful in diagnosing or fixing other problems i've had with it).

Cheers,

Mike

Sounds like a power steering sensor failure, people people have had these fail.

Do a search on the forums you will find more details :)

Yep, PAS sensor, if you got warratny great, if you aint they are about

Ahh, I see.

Having had a look at a few of the other posts I think I get the idea. My Furby was involved in a blocked phelan chamber incident which resulted in the passenger footwell looking more like a victorian water feature. The garage that fixed it simply removed the filter from the bottom of the chamber and I suspect the sensor acquired water damage as a result of the blockage, when the filter was removed or now as the water just drips onto it.

Any one got any ideas of where the sensor is located under my car? I've had a poke arround but nothing seems to stand out. I gather it's supposed to be on the steering column, but where? Any photos or diagrams appreciated.

Cheers,

Mike

From what I gather, its under the engine block leaning to the right wheel......looking logically it sits just in front of the pedals

:D

the sensor your looking for is called a steering angle sensor and should only take about 10 mins to fit, peice off ****, either two allen keys or two 25torx holdiing it onto the drivers side off the steering rack itself, when taken out the sensor looks like a half moon, cable runs over to your pas pump, enjoy :)

Any idea how long these sensors last before they wear out ? and how often do they need changing ? I have a 2001 TDi 35,000K on the clock and my steering is playing up, no lights showing but out of the blue heavy steering.

Will I do any damage if I drive the car round for a while before having it fixed ?

Cheers

Will......

They have modified the sensor now so the new version shouldnt give any problems

Have seen them fail however on cars with as little as 5,000 miles on them, its water ingress that kills them I think.
