seems to be driving fine otherwise i getting coilovers fitted over next couple of days so will investigate then

sounds like a broken spring to me mate

when you put the coilover on mate dont forget new bearings and top mounts and the threaded washer.

then put the coilover on the car and pu the top cup on.

I forgot it first time round and it was ok but I had a nocking, turns out it was the suspension, and the bearings and mounts were Sha99ed. the bearing just fell apart as the top cup was tightened direct onto the top mount.

all experience lol.

kool i will see if i can pick up

Bearing (Top of Front Suspension) ..............................s 1J0 412 249 ............................£5.60 x2

Strut Mounting (Suspension Top Bushes).... .............. . 1J0 412 331 C ........................£9.10 x2

is this correct m8?

yea mate thems um, when you remove the suspension off the car youll need a 7mm allan key, when its off you will see in the old top mount there is a Washer threaded, youll need to compress the springs and remove it or just get some more, the PN are in that thread. I had no compressors so I just got new ones also the std stuff is at Grandparents up Yorkshire way lol

and do halfords keeps all this in stock or gotta order it in?

The boung noise will just be the spring seat itself could be some dirt or gravel caught in the spring cup

  • Author

i will get it looked at this week before i fit the coiloverss

You might need to get a set of keyes from toolstation or screwfix as all the kits in halfords miss out the 7mm. stupid I know but if you get the weitecs they have been nice to put a 8mm hole in the top not 7mm like std.

Bearing (Top of Front Suspension) ..............................s 1J0 412 249 ............................£5.60 x2

Threaded Bush (Nut for front Suspension)... ............... 1H0 412 365 A ........................£1.49 x2 .............. This is the Nut that keeps the Bearing and Top Mounting in place before fitting in to the leg.

Bearing (Top of Front Suspension) ..............................s 1J0 412 249 ............................£5.60 x2

Strut Mounting (Suspension Top Bushes).... .............. . 1J0 412 331 C ........................£9.10 x2

Screw ..................................................................................s N 102 07 804 ..........................£1.72 x2 .............. I think this is the front Strut Retaining Bolt

Nut (For the above bolt) ...................................................s N 015 08 16 ...........................£0.65 x2

Hex Screw HD ............................................................... ...s N 905 17 302 ..........................£0.93 x2 ................I think this is the Rear Damper bolt securing it to the rear Beam.

Nut (For the above bolt) ...................................................s N102 86 110 ...........................£0.44 x2

Tools:

Front: 7mm allan key

18mm socket and Spanner

17mm socket

10mm socket

I use a large spark plug socket with the 7mm key in the middle of it and an adjustable on the top of the plug remover to turn it, then a ratchet extension for more leverage on the Allan key to stop it turning.

then use the 8mm key for the weitecs.

there could be other items needed too.

Rear:

a vice is a must to remove the rear shock from the top mount.

If you dont have a spring compressor then just buy some new: (Threaded Bush (Nut for front Suspension)... ............... 1H0 412 365 A ........................£1.49 x2 .............. This is the Nut that keeps the Bearing and Top Mounting in place before fitting in to the leg.)

that way you just remove the std stuff and leave it ready to go back on another car. also better for keepin them together.

hope that helps a bit mate

Broken spring (which you won't really care about in the circs) or siezed top bearing (which you will, but the advice is all here already).

Oh and when you fit your coilovers, wind them right down, put the springs on and the bearings and top mounts then put the threaded washer in and screw it right down toll it wont go anymore and get it tight, then wind the coilovers up to about half way on the threads then fit them to the car.

easy lol

It does sound like a coil spring broken and if not a problem that will lead to a broken coil spring like the top suspension bearing seized (common problem)

As you are replacing with Coilovers then all you need is in Billys note.

That way you do not have to use any parts from your old struts.

However you will find it a little awkward removing the old struts from the car without spring compressors, unless you undo the wishbone bottom ball joint to get more space, but be careful of the drive shaft on the drivers side does not pop out and you loose oil..

Also Halfords is not best place for parts, better off with GSF , Euro Parts or Main dealer. you can also use VW, Seat or Audi as they are the same part numbers.
