I only did this a couple of months back and i can't remember the exact details - however i remember it was obvious

ie if you start twisting and it doesn't move, depress the pedal and it will

the important part is when you put it back in - it will twist and stop, but then needs to twist a little more to lock in, or the switch doesn't work

EDIT:

just looked back and found my old thread, in which i was directed to http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1158315

I know this is an old thread but I had this problem earlier this evening. After following all the advice on this and other threads I took the switch off, took it apart and cleaned it with contact cleaner. When I put it back in all the brake lights were on. I realised that I had put the 4 pin connector back the wrong way around. I took it apart put it in the other way fixed it in position and it works fine. I will get a new one but at least I will be able to work tomorrow. So thank you to all that contributed to the forum it was great information.

I got mine from vw as skoda didn't have any in stock, not worth buying from euro car parts as it's only a quid or two less and it's probably an inferior part like most switches and sensors are compared to vw ones
