I had this problem on a series 1 Octavia estate. The light sensor is part of the hatch lock mechanism, inside the tailgate. If you can access it you can see if it's operating the micro switch. Think you'd need a whole new locking unit if faulty, switch is not sold separately. This would explain lights not working, if the system doesn't recognise that the tailgate is open it will lock again. Hope this helps.
