Suspension alignment after fitting a new gearbox mount?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, im having a problem after fitting a upper gearbox mount in the correct position. Which required the gearbox lifting upwards and pushing forward.

When im accelerating at any given rate in any gear, im finding the car wants to wonder to pull to the left.

Letting off of the throttle allows the car to straighten up and carry on going straight.

Can this have affected the geometry?

The car has had new Vredsteins on the front today, and not long since had a 4 wheel geometry setup a month or two since.

The new tyres seem to have emphasized things, but has settled down a little.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Guess no one can :(

A new mount shouldn't have affected the steering geo. Any movement of the box it changed will be taken up by the inner CV joint. It might be a bit of a daft question but are the tyre pressures all OK?

Changing a gearbox mount shouldn't affect suspension alignment. The powertrain is mounted on flexible rubber mounting and will move about quite a bit under the torque of acceleration and engine braking. This is normal. The movement is accommodated by the 'dive' allowed for in the driveshaft joints. From your symptoms I would guess that there is excessive movement/wear in the front suspension, possibly on the right-hand-side. Look for anything which is allowing the O/S to move forward, possibly wear in the wishbone bushes.

Sorry guys, i've only just seen this topic. Didn't think anyone had replied.

It was noticably different to drive after fitting the new upper gearbox mount, now the car had been geo'd several months before the old mount collapsed.

The car is wearing the inside edges off of tyres, but that was only noticable since the lowering springs were fitted.

Funnily several months on i've got a thumping noise coming from the offside front when going over sharp ridges in the road, the wishbones were changed earlier last year.

I've got some topmounts and front suspension struts to go on there.

Although im not having any handling issues etc etc, just tyre wear and the pulling to one side on power.
