Swapping 1.9 tdi 110 engine and gearbox for Fabia VRS parts - is it possible?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I was thinking about getting big power from my current set up, and I wondered whether it would be cheaper and probably more reliable to just swap engine and gearbox from a PD unit. I am not sure whether anyone in here has done so, but any help with this would be appreciated.

Also how much would an engine and gearbox swap out cost?

Thanks

I would have thought it's possible . . . although I don't know if the electrics side of things might also need to be replaced, requiring a new ECU, instrument cluster etc.?

It'll work out cheaper to just chop your car in against a PD 130 Ocatvia surely - they are out there!

If its already a pd engine (which i assume its not) its an easy swap, if its the old type external pump its a fair bit of work as you need lift pump and wiring, plus you ll need to add in can bus wiring to prevent fault codes, we did a conversion a year or so agoemoticon-0148-yes.gif

How much power are you looking to get? Unless you're trying to get on the far side of 200bhp, then it may be cheaper to mod your 110 than to change cars (and certainly than to do an engine swap). Bigger injectors, possibly bigger turbo etc. should give you some more grunt . . . .

Yeah i know, but i am worried how reliable it will be. I know with the PD engine, you just have to chang turbo and your pretty much at 190 - 200 bhp.

I suspect you'll need the full engine, including most of the ancilliaries (maybe not the alternator and air con pump, but certainly the fuel pump, gearbox, ECU, engine wiring loom, plus driveshaft and front hub carriers from an Octy TDi130 (most L&K, some late Ambiante and possible Elegance). It's probably easier to change the car, or accept only having the 5-speed box and tune the 110.

I heard what you said about reliability, but the 110 and 130 use the same block, crank, rods and pistons!

Thanks for that Ken :)
