No air con and fluctuating temperature guage

Featured Replies

Hi

I appreciate I am probably asking what is already covered somewhere, but having spent some considerable time searching I decided to just post my query.

My car is an Octavia 2003, Ambiente 1.9TDi, owned from new. My two latest problems.

1. Air con has stopped working. Switch lights up, but no cold air. When engine on tick over and operate switch there is no change in engine note as there used to be. Gas should be fine as was topped up and working until recently, has just decided to go on strike!

2. Since Christmas if I change heater temperature, the temperature guage on the dash drops suddenly, then slowly recovers. It did fluctuate rapidly for a while, so got the thermostat replaced which seemed to cure it. However temperature guage is now 'dancing' again.

Any help much appreciated.

The second point could be the coolant temperature sensor - although I'm not sure whereabouts they are on the TDI engine. AFAIK when you change the temp setting up it re-routes warm coolant through the heater matrix so if the coolant temp sensor is duff or you have an airlock in the system it may give a sudden false reading when the re-routing occurs.

The first point sounds like the air con clutch may have given up - you may find if you take off one of the engine undertrays the clutch is sitting there! Like you say, when you engage the air con the engine note should change as it then has to drive the air con compressor as well.

I'd agree, in which case the 2 issues aren't really related, except by being on the same car at the same time.

Try and get a fault code scan if you can too.

If it is the clutch, what code am I expecting?

Would this 'just happen' after seven years and 54k? Had the cam belt renewed recently, any connection? I used my usual garage and have never had cause for concern.
