Turbo lag: V6 2.5 TDI vs 1.9 TDI

Featured Replies

Dear Community,

I'm writing to you in search of someone, who have tried both the V6 2.5 TDI and the 1.9 TDI engines. I am well aware of the economical difference in terms of service, mpg and so forth.

My interest lies in the engines, more specifically turbo lag. I am driving a 1.9 TDI myself and am well impressed by the almost non existent turbo lag. My car responds almost instantly, when putting the pedal to the metal and i would like to know, is this the same in the V6 2.5 TDI or how does it work out?

Please, if you know, leave a message of what you think and i will be very grateful.

Thanks in advance. :)

Turbo lag depends on the "starting condition", in other words do you boot it from low speed light load, or are you already at higher speed medium load (e.g. on the motorway).

I have always found the 1.9 tdi (130) a bit "laggish" despite the variable geometry turbine housing. Laggish at sub-2200 rpm or so from memory, although that experience was based on the Passat. And I always found it too aggressive when it did eventually spool up, and hair-raisingly quick from 2500 rpm.

I drive the 2.5 tdi now (155) and I find it a lot more "linear", it picks up from lower revs and is there all the time pulling like a train from 1400 rpm upwards. Love it. Though it does use a lot more fuel than the 130, especially around town.
