Urgent help with buying a 2006 Superb for towing please

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Hopefully someone can help me please. Im possibly going to be buying (tommorow - eeek) a 2006 56 plate 1.8 T Auto Comfort Superb with 28k and FSH.

I need to know please if there is anything that i should specifically be asking the garage or looking for myself? Are they nice and reliable?

My wife and I are looking for a car that we can keep for several years to come and we're tempted by this as we now have a family which we didnt have when we had our 2007 Fabia Vrs from new. We liked the fabia so hence why im here again now :-)

So yeah, im looking for a few answers to questions please -

What kinda mpg should my wife get on a mixture of A class roads and town?

What issues should i be looking out for?

What are they like as towing vehicles? - our caravan is 1350kgs fully laden

How easily can the 150 bhp engine be upgraded and is it only software?

Can the autobox handle this increase?

If you can be of any help at alll then id really appreciate it.

Thanks, dave

I bought a Superb to use as a towcar - and it's a mixed bag.

My car has been almost 100% reliable over the 3.5 years that I have had it, but it has several pre-existing serious design defects which need careful attention. Possibly the worst is rain water ingress - do a Forum search for the cause and the fix. If you buy a Superb, fix this problem absolutely without fail. I have attempted to fix all of the known weaknesses on my car and so far, it has paid off. No doubt it will bite me eventually.

As a car, it's comfortable and roomy, goes well and is extremely economical (I have a 130 HP diesel) but it has probably the worst handling of any large car presently sold. Make sure you can live with this - I do a lot of towing and a lot of motorway running, both of which suit this car really well. Unhitched on a B-road, it handles like a boat and gives no driving satisfaction whatsoever.

Note carefully that the 1.8 petrol engine has a lower towing weight than the diesels. I can't imagine why anybody would consider buying a petrol Superb as the 1.9 diesel engines are so good. The auto transmission is also of dubious reliability and hopeless (as I found on a test drive) for towing. With a heavy trailer, all you get is torque converter slip, engine noise and no progress. The dealers are hopeless.

On the credit side, the cars are extremely well built for the money and will do starship mileages if properly cared for. A big part of this is identifying the problems and fixing them before they bite you. I was going to say that a Superb is a safe car - but the rainwater ingress can cause loss of braking assistance....
