The Silver Beast (Adrian, Quinten & Steve's old car)

Featured Replies

Hi All,

So I have finally returned to the world VRS by resceuing "The Beast". I'm new to the MK1 but was pretty active on the MK2 forum when I had my modded Black one (sold last year due to redundancy).

Link from when Quinten sold it a couple of years back http://www.z3mcoupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5322

I'm really looking for more info on the car I've bought, to be honest I think it was a risk to buy this one but the price was great and I cant bare to see it fall into an unloved state at the hands of some 19 yr old. Over the next few months I'm going to be restoring her back to her glory days.

Using the search tool I've found that this car has been in the Brisky family until last year when it migrated from Sheffield up to the North East (where I am now). It was then owned by a chap called Tony or just under a year and then by Steve (2nd Steve to own it) who I bought it from. It unfortunately suffered from a cracked turbo when Steve had it and it has just had a new vf34 fitted in the last few weeks.

I also read that there were some issues when Tony bought the car from Steve (the 1st) over the private reg?

Currently I have no idea how much power the car is making. It is stupidly fast, my MK2 made about 260bhp and this is much quicker but on the standard internals is this safe? my gut tells me that it is too much power for an AGU? I know that Steve (1st) had it remapped in 2008 to 245-290bhp (boost controller min to max).

Any info would be much appreciated!

Ron

running ihi power the first job i would do is get the rods changed straight away. you will be pushing the 300bhp barrier and the car has been driven hard for XXXX miles so will be felling strain so a new set of rods will give you that piece of mind.

  • 1 month later...

Heh, its good to see the car is back in the Briskoda fold...

What would you like to know? :)

Hey there fella, I feel like we are in some way related :)

So far I've got to the bottom of most of the niggles, there are a couple of things like I'm not sure are normal for this car or not and it would be great to know what it ranliek when you had it?

  • Idle is a bit rough when cold, but steadys out after 10 mins of driving
  • I have an error N249 mechanical malfunction but I dont know if the N249 has been bypassed or not
  • When backing off the gas, I get a fluttering whistle sound....its very subtle and after the main Whoosh fro the DV (could be a problem relating to the above or it could be normal)
  • It has a load of mod parts that wen't listed in the sale liek vented TT rear calipers/disks etc, did you ever get a complete list of mods?

Any help would be great

The rough when cold is normal. That was attributed to the map from Jabbasport, and at the time they were looking at fixing that. No idea if 3 years later they are still "working" on it, best check with them...

I've no idea what the N249 is, so I can't comment on that. Neither do I remember any 'fluttering' when coming of the accelerator. It's been 3 years since I owned it, so who knows what else has happened to it.

The list of mods that were done by either Adrian (SkodiRS) and me are (from the advert):

* Jabbasport IHI VF34 turbo conversion

* Jabbasport CAI

* Jabbasport FMIC

* Jabbasport exhaust manifold

* Jabbasport boost controller to vary the performance from 277 bhp (0.7 bar) to 337 bhp (1.2 bar)

* 3" Blueflame down pipe and 100cel sports cat

* Jetex cat back exhaust

* Audi S3 MAF

* Audi S3 ASR

* Bailey DV30 diverter valve

* KW v3 suspension

* Mintex brake discs

* Ferodo DS2500 brake pads

* Matt black OEM alloys

* Neuspeed rear anti-roll bar

* Audi S3 upper strut brace

* Audi S3 lower strut brace

* Prospeed Motorsport WRC spoiler

* Sachs clutch

* Cruise control

* VW MFD G satellite navigation + AV AUX input

* Parrot CK3000 Evolution bluetooth handsfree kit

* Some cosmetic mods (grills, bonnet lifters, splitters)

Anything else must have been done after I sold it.

The standard Mk1 vRS already has the same rear calipers and discs as the Mk1 Audi TT (both the 225bhp 1.8T and the 3.2 VR6 engines). The discs are 256x22mm vented as standard.

If your calipers are not green, then they have just been replaced with new ones at some point. Green is vRS, Blue is R32, Red is GTi Anniversary and silver is TT (all the same calipers).

Welcome to the Mk1's! Hope you enjoy the car, it sure sounds like you should! :thumbup:

Ive got the genuine prospeed WRC SPOILER off it on my car now :)

Cool thanks Quinten, the spec seems to have been added to since then :) I guess each owner has modded it some more.

BTW what is the S3 ASR?

I sold the spoiler as I didnt like the look, the full tinted windows and the spoiler together made it look a bit too gangsta to me and so far with the standard spoiler I havent had any adverse effects.

Its also now got a pretty decent ICE install in there with a double din DVD, Sat NAV unit and ifinity speakers all round, swoosh boost guage etc

I know it was also re-mapped by RS tuning in Leeds and according to the boost guage its making 1 bar of boost on the lowest setting and 1.5bar on the top which is wierd. The last owner said that before he had a new turbo installed it was 0.7 to 1.2 but it fulls a lot harder since the new turbo.

I must say that it pulls frighteningly hard, I had a stage 2 modded MK2 Vrs before with about 260bhp and this is a lot quicker

with that turbo you should be seeing 300+ so is a very quick car. get the mapping sorted and i would DEFFO put rods on the shopping list as you are in the very upper limits of stock internals

s3 asr is just an updated software for the asr system it works alot better on the s3 but imo it should be turned off as asr is an accident waiting to happen

p.s cant see a diff on the list has it not had this done??? 300bhp and no diff must be fun lol

Thanks for the info, the ASR light rarely comes on apart from booting it out of corners, my MK2 had ESP and that was much worse for intefering.

I'm not sure there are any mapping issues, it runs well and now that the TIP is fixed (had a tear) I'm not getting any popping etc Boost seems high though at 1 to 1.5 bar but like I say it goes well :) Nextt tiime Im down south l pop into Jabba but having talked to 2 previous owners who had it on the Jabba map both complained about it where as the RS map seems good apart from on cold start but that was the same with the Jabba.

I talked to Mike at MB about changing the rods on your advice and he didnt seem to think it was worth it financially. That is basically a head off, manifolds, sump off etc job and if doing that we may as well rebuild the head too and put new pistons in so it very quiickly gets expensive......probably almost as much as the whole car is worth!

It doesnt use any oil and goes well so i'll keep driving her and if it throws a rod then I'll look at rebuilding......the cost is the same either way in all likely hood although there is nothing to say it will go bang........its done 109K without going up! Also swapping the bottom end for a BAM block is probably cheaper?

sounds like your best bet is just enjoy it and if worst case it does go then a new engine will be needed prob cheaper to throw a bam in as it has stronger rods as standard. maybe i look at things different as i 99% of the work on my car so no one else to pay apart from me lol

yep a tear in the tip wouldnt have helped lol :rofl:

Had a fun week finally getting har all up running properly, firstly the rough idle turned out to be a split rocker cover breather hose.... looking at the history the lower crank breather was changed 2 years ago but looking at the upper one I think it may even have been the orginal!

Also changed all the vac pipes for silicone ones and put in the pipework for bypassing the N249 which I'll do this weekend.

Most interestingly is that the little whistling/fluttering sounds I was getting when coming off the throttle were due to the Bailey DV30 being worn out. I removed it and pushed the plunger in whilst holding my thumb over the van pipe and there was no suction at all :doh:

I suspect that the old turbo failed as the DV was opening on boost pressure alone and that also explained the boost spikes I was seeing. Luckily this turbo has only done 500 miles!

Luckily another brisky member sent me a DV to test and it was like a night and day difference! (Big thanks to Jaymd) so I bought a forge 007P and put that on this morning and for the first time wound her up to full boost....

F**k me this car is fast!

Going to have it in at RS Tuning who did the map just to see if everything is running as it should be next week.

Quality :)

Yeah i bet the knackered DV wasn't doing the old turbo any favours, especially if the old one was running at very high psi.

Has the 007P got the standard green spring in it? You might want to buy the spring kit off of Forge if you're running more than 15psi otherwise the 007P could be leaking boost at part throttle.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that the DV must have been worn out for quite some time as it is mechanical so will have become worn over the 60K miles its been on the car. I got the DV with the Yellow spring as recomended.....wound up to full boost I was gettin 1.7 Bar earlier which is crazy so I've turned it back down to about 1.2 while I get the mapping checked over. I drives really well but that boost seems a bit too high to me even for an IHI.

Once I get it over 3000 rpm its like being carried off by a tidal wave of power :rofl:

Only car I've had before that was like it was a VWM corrado that I owned back in 2001 that was making 230+ bhp (but very light weight and lots of torque)
