now changed the above plus track rod ends drop links and checked steering rack bush.can feel play in the passenger side track control arm so does this mean i need a new rack?

also didnt someone fit another rack to improve turn in speed?

Have a look at the steering rack ends (not track rod) there is often a small amount of wear there which is picked up by the steering wheel

Isn't inner wear usually on the track rod side of the joint and not the rack? I replaced both track rods recently because of play on the inner joints caused by speedhump damage from work. The quicker rack you mention is probably the one from the R32 or certain Audi TTs - I remember a few really good posts here about people who've been down that route, and you can probably dig them up by search the forum for 'quick rack'. It's a mod I'm still considering as I think the steering lets the Octy down by being a bit too sluggish, although it does make motorway driving less tiring.
