Water in Rear Hatch

Featured Replies

Just had a weird experience. Opened hatch on my VRS and could hear water slopping about inside, a dribble came out of the trim joint on the nearside and also when I removed the nearside rubber bump stop on the hatch. Ah ha, I thought its the rear washer hose, it must of come off. But no, washer works ok. Has anyone else had water collect inside the hatch door itself ? Seals all seem to be ok but we did have a lot of rain two nights ago.

I had a leak from a gap in the sealent around the light unit on a previous car that caused water to collect in the boot compartment...Could this be the cause?

I had a problem like this - water sitting on the boot ridge just inside the seal, then running into the boot space.

The rear jet was working however when i pulled off the rear boot trim the washer jet pipe was not connected to the jet - it was facing the jet hole, so some was going through the jet giving the indication it was working, however 1/2 of it was being sprayed into the hatch door space.

Initially checked it but folding down the rear seat and putting the rear jet on, and watching for water comming out at the bottom of the hatch door.

The hose was pushed back on and since then (4 months) I've not had the same problem.

Supposidly this is a common problem with the golfs, so I would suspect that therefore the fabia may suffer accordingly.

Get the back cover off and have a look - it'll take half an hour but it'll put your mind at rest.

The cover pulls off from the bottom (latch end) and is very tight.

While your in there it may be worth rotating the grab handle through 180 degrees as I also found this was contantly getting trapped in the seal. By rotating it through 180 degrees it shortens the length protruding through the trim hole and doesn't get trapped in the boot seal.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. Have had the hatch panel off (its a tight bugger isn't it why oh do manufacturers do this - had to change a Peugeot 307 offside headlamp bulb over the weekend and its impossible to do it roadside as they use platic studs that you can't remove but thats another matter). Tested the washer jet with the panel off and no leakage seen. I recall that I had the hatch up for a while whilst unloading on Saturday and it was raining but can't believe that the water inside the hatch door (not the boot) got there somehow in that time. Can't see an obvious root into the hatch for water so I'm still scratching my head over this and all suggestions gratefully received. I think it might have been going on for a while as I recall the car condensating internally when we had a cold snap and I left it out (its usually garaged).
