INTERMITTENT FABIA 1.4TDI STARTING PROBLEMS?

Featured Replies

Hi there.

Just wondering if anybody knew what was up and has the solution or has had the same problem.

When ive been out in the Fabia running about, once or twice in the past its had problems starting after being stopped for only a little while.

Done it today for the first time in a couple of months. Feels to me as if the immobiliser has kicked in and theres no fuel pumping through, yet when I locked the car and re-opened it, it continued to not start and did this probably about 8-10 times where as before it would have only done this once or twice.

Any ideas anyone?? :S

Hi

im thinking you should get a diagnostics done on the car, with a fault that's intermittent its gonna be hard to put your finger on it, put a shout out on here for anyone in your area that can read fault codes.

until then do u have a spare key for the car?, try using it for a while in-case there is a fault with it ( immobilizer wise), ...

im assuming when u say its not starting... is it turning over and not firing? if so how long to u try turning it over for?.... if the glow plugs where not heating and you tried to start it , it will not start straight away, but after turning it over for a while the diesel will ignite due to being compressed... and usually accompanied with a puff of black smoke from the rear ...

I am having the same trouble. Fabia always starts in the morning, then after I do school run I sometimes have to turn the key over for 30-60 seconds before it starts. Have had battery, started motor & alternator checked all ok and did oil change. Engine management light finally came on last week, said lambda sensor needed replacing. Cost £250, 2 days later still got the same starting problem.

Its been going on for 9 mths & the garage still have not idea what can be wrong. Also after 8hrs at work car starts fine. Am thinking of giving car to husband to drive as he does less short journeys, this seems to be the only thing that helps.

Any help would be great, pulling hair out now :(

Have you had the cambelt changed withing the last 12 months?

SWMBOs 1.4 TDI suddenly became difficult to start and after chasing around replacing sensors and the battery I discovered that the garaged who had changed the belt had not correctly adjusted the cam timing using the three locking bolts on the cam pulley.

I adjusted this myself and have not had any further issues with poor starting or any warning lights.

Interesting..we have had cambelt changed but it was a good 12 - 14 mths ago.

That's about how long it took to start having problems with SWMBOs car. Possibly because the belt stretched just enough for the engine management to get upset about the cam timing. We started to get a flashing glow plug light from time to time too, but it did not come back on straight away when cleared. The fault code we got was for an implausible signal from the engine speed sensor, but as I say this did not come on all the time.

Cheers for the replies so far.

I do know someone who can lay his hands on a code reader as it goes, will have to get it to him.

As far as the belt goes, its a 2006 and ive had the car for just about 2 years now and the belt has not been changed in my ownership and ive got no way of knowing whether it was changed before that (which also makes me think that its prob a good idea to get it done about now before something nasty happens being at 105000m!! )

Ive also got no spare to try out with the car, so theres that one out the window!

I always wait for the glow plug light to go off before starting diesels too, but havnt tried turning it over for any more than about 2 seconds because 1) it never needs to and 2) when it turns over when it dosnt want to start, it sounds different. Like an empty tinny sort of turning over sound as opposed to the normal turn over sound.

Whatever it is, it sounds like a bit of a common problem so it would be great if theres anybody else out there with any further info

Cheers
