Poor AM/LW Reception

Featured Replies

Hi there,

i am new to this ste and i am not technically able!!!

however since i bought my Octavia 2004 (later model) i cannot get any decent reception on medium wave. i have trawelled thru the site and found lots of info on poor FM reception. but, my fm reception is good. does anyone out there know whether i can buy a booster ect that a tecnophile like me can plug in! or is it more complicated than that? if so could you actually recommend the make and model of the booster, or whatever it is that i need.......

my dealer suggested i use this site as it was very helpful.

cheers for any help whatsover.

Hi there,

Welcome to the forum. I would be interested to hear what comes from this as I have the same problem too.

When my Mk1 octy was about 18months old, I found that i got no AM reception at all. I suspected the Aerial as per the FM issues (even though my FM was ok) and took the car to the dealer. They said the Aerial was OK and put an inline booster and then I got AM ok.

Subsequently, I did have the Aerial replaced as the FM reception disappeared too and last week I took out a faulty car kit and thought I'd just try the AM without the booster and it worked ok, so i left it out.

So the short of that is that it could be the aerial, but an inline booster might solve it too.

edit: something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Audi-Skoda-Seat-Aerial-amplifier-CT27AA05-/190340124010?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_FasciaPlates_SM&hash=item2c5127cd6a was fitted to mine, but there are cheap one (£3) on ebay aswell

No problem - hope it works out for you.

I think a booster is definitely worth a punt before looking to replace the aerial (and if you do, see http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/145594-aerial-removal/)

Do you have the original Skoda headunit or an aftermarket one?

its the original. i got it out ok, after a bit of sweat and nearly tears! i think it is called a stream

but alas the booster that i bought doesn't fit!

the connections for the aerial are totally different to the booster i bough from ebay (as per the earlier message). no great shakes, it was only £8

but i am back to square one!

one other thing i have noticed is that when the engine is off the reception is fine. when i am driving it is awful. could this be an issue to point towards another problem!

any ideas...../

many thnx

The aerial has a booster built into it and it's usually this that goes faulty and gives poor reception.

I would fully agree. The plastic gasket fails allowing water to get in to the small printed circuit ,and shorting out the components. I dismantled my aerial base ,cleaned, and dried it,then sealed it with silicone sealent, four years ago.
