A75 Dumfries and Galloway(Gatehouse bypass)

Featured Replies

was travelling back from stranraer today about 13:00 along A75 east. At the foot of the Gatehouse of Fleet bypass where the road goes from single to dual carraigway on the eastbound side there was the local traffic police in black uniform(trousers/shirts) standing next to their dark grey Saab 95(unmarked).

Now I don't have problem with enforcing the correct road speed but it does seem sneaky that:

1: They place themselves where the single carraigeway becomes dual thus allowing people their first overtaking oppotunity in several miles on a road with a mix of cars lorries and agricultural vehicles. A place where people will understandably increase their speed for a short time to overtake.

2: No high Viz vests/ Marked car. I thought, possibly wrongly that speed traps were meant to be a visible deterrent.

3: where they were positioned and people's responses when they twigged it was the police at the last minute could have caused an accident.

4; Not to mention that they were probably in breach of their own health and safety policy by not wearing high viz clothing whilst working next to moving traffic on a trunk road.

Any police officers care to inform me of the correct procedures?

Hi Vis only has to be worn when out of the car.

And what a good incentive not to speed. What's the problem with that?

If you do the crime then expect the fine!! Simples.

They were standing(as I said) at the rear of the car holding a speed gun ready to aim it if they thought necessary. As I said no high viz on. This is a major ferry route, mainly single carraigeway on the 100mile stretch from Stranraer to Gretna. Lorries are limited to 40mph so naturally when a rare overtaking chance happens one may be expected to need a short burst of speed when safe to do so. And no I wasn't speeding as I was at work so feel that the 40ppm I can claim do not stretch to excessive fuel consumption.

I would think high viz would be a basic requirement of their own H&S policy. I know it is ours when enforcing welfare checks on livestock hauliers.
