CV joint noise

Featured Replies

Can anyone describe the noise made by a worn out CV joint in an Octavia?

I've always understood a CV joint to make a 'clicking' or 'clacking' noise especially around corners.

I've got a loud knocking noise coming from my front driver wheel - 1 knock for every revolution, sound like a pile driver at 30mph and like a helicopter @ 70mph. Gets worse when turning left and when the wheel is not under load - i.e. the noise is louder when I engage the clutch or ease off the accelerator and am not braking. There is a little less noise when turning right. I can now also feel the vibrations through the steering wheel and in the car, although this is not bad at the moment.

There's little or no play in the CV joints when wiggled and as I'm told by my garage it doesn't make any noise when on the ramp.

I'm going for the 'wait 'till it gets worse, when the problem will be more obvious' approach at the moment.

Any thoughts / help welcome.

Thanks,

Mark

It could be a worn wheel bearing thats causing the noise,id personally strip down that side & if bearing is ok id remove the cv boot & have a good look inside the cv joint. id do this sooner than later too as it sounds like the noise needs investigating now not later.

Thanks. The bearing is new ,although I've had problems with them before (wearing out after only 2000 miles! - it must have been a duff batch - I hope). There's no play in the bearings.
