brake lights not activating

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I have a problem with my 04 vRS ( as always) my brake lights are intemittantly not lighting up when I press brake, also a couple of times my brake pedal has given me abs kickback on normal braking ( dry road, light braking slow speed) my intial feeling was contact switch in the pedal but the local dealer said that that failure is all or nothing fault, but looking around I can see that it can show as an intermittant fault but it does light a fault light on the dash, mine is not showing a fault light and is showing no fault on guided fault find and typically the lights worked for the 2 hours I was at the garage with it  ! it has had a new main engine wiring loom fitted in July this year ( as i had the indoor swimming pool issue) I dont know if this could be the issue does anyone have any ideas suggestions other than a litre of petrol and a match thank you

I had intermittent brake lights. I took off the switch, jiggled it about and sprayed it with switch cleaner and it worked again for a week or so. I fiddled it again a couple of times after that, then got a new one from the dealers for about £17. Easy to fit and cured the problem for good. So yes, when my switch failed it was not all or nothing.

£17?

I paid our local VW garage more like £10

Easy DIY fix tho if it is the switch

Change the switch as I had intermittent brake lights and one switch change latter on problem.

Hi Thank you all for your response I will change the switch ( altough I dont know how to do it) I will find a garage that can lol do you think thats whats making the abs activate as well?

thank you

The switch is a twist fit, just like a light bulb. It's easy. All you need to know is is it a 2 pole or 4 pole before ordering.
