Tappets or not ? Water pump?

Featured Replies

Silly question ....my felicia 1.3 mpi sounds like a small sewing machine, could this be the the tappets? I only ask as with my other car i re set the tappets at every service (well it is an old mini)

if it si tappets can they be reset and if so how?

Also there is a grumbling (for lack of a better word) that sounds like the bearing in the water pump, is there a quick check I can to? Car losing no water at all.

I had a metalic rumbling sound when I first bought mine. I eventually located it. Seemed the timing chain was loose, so replaced it asap. Was easy enough to do!

To check if it's the water pump, slacken the tension off the alternator belt and remove it, and briefly start the car up - if the noise is still there, it's not the water pump (or the alternator).

I've re-set the clearances on my recce Felicia several times, and it's still a clattery old shed - the problem is that the arms wear unevenly and you can't measure the clearance properly.

Ear plugs? Lower standards?

The no-feeler-gauge method is based on knowing the thread pitch of the adjuster screws (I'm assuming here it's a 1mm pitch, I don't know for sure so please check rather than take my word for it) - you screw the adjuster in fully until it's just touching, then back the screw off by e.g. exactly 1/4 of a turn for a 0.25mm gap, or 1/5 of a turn (or 72o if you've an angle gauge handy) for a 0.2mm gap, etc.

More generally, {distance to move} / {thread pitch} = {number of turns}, where the distance and thread pitch are expressed in identical units.

Re set tappets (AGAIN!!) still tappety tap tap lol but have decided that i can live with it and the Cam Chain rattle (for the time being) car drives spot on apart form the rattle.

I also took the throttle body cover off and with engine running gave it good dose of carb cleaner. I did this as when stcuk in traffic for two consecutive days it stalled on me twice in stop start traffic bogged down when pulling away the wene moving and I stopped it stalled. So hopefull this has cured the problem, Oh i also serviced the car last week oil filters and plugs.

As a guide im getting approx 200 miles to £20 @ 118.9 a litre. This is from cold town driving for approx two miles, then eight miles on a dual carridway. A gap of tenhoutrs then the same in reverse lol.

may try the acetone trick I did in my frontera as that upped MPG from approx 19mpg to 24mpg but the improvement re smoother running and pick up was amazing!! think if memory serves it was 1.5ml of 100% acetone per litlre of petrol.
