oh no,ive gone and blown my turbo

Featured Replies

Hi guys, just thought i would let you know that ive killed the turbo or at least im pretty certain i have, not had a proper look yet

basically i was coming back from scarborough to hull last night and seen as though the roads where clear i took the opportunity to give the car some stick and it was going pretty well, got back into hull and was taking it steady the last few miles home and then turned it off, came to get in it tonight and fired it up and now the turbo is screeching when its revved and when driven it has no power and makes no boost whatsoever on the gauge, plus im getting the dredded oil burning smell and smoke out the exhaust so im pretty sure its the turbo, will probably have a look in morning by removing the tip and seeing if i can turn the impellor but if any techies have any suggestions in the mean time then im all ears and i have a couple of questions

what sort of job is it to replace the turbo ? as i have a friend that has a spare one that i can have

im a trained mechanic so i know what im doing, just wondered if theres anything to be aware of or if theres any awkward bits to get at?

thanks in advance for any info given

took the tip off and found shed loads of oil in there, the impellor it turning but cant really tell if its spinning freely cos of the oil,was blowing clouds of smoke out last night so i think its probably knackered, engine ticks over smooth and quiet so i dont think the engine is damaged in any way

any techies out there care to comment??

PM sent.

Sounds like time to fit a larger one ;)

That'll be Rich's SPS that will. I told him today he is totally responsible and liable! :D Sorry to hear that though. Cough! JBS Big Turbo. Cough!

lol @ dave,i`ll send rich the bill :D

funny you should mention it but i am considering a bigger turbo, dont know if i want to spend too much but as you can buy a ko4 that will bolt straight on for a similar price as a ko3s then i might consider doing this,i know i wont get a massive increase in power but i aint that fussed, just weighing up the options, ihi and gt28rs are a bit more than i was wanting to spend so ko4 might be the best option, ive been trawling various vag related sites to collect info and im still confused but it can just sit on the back garden untill ive decided,im in no rush

Sounds like a plan, they do say there's not much point in upgrading to the KO4 but I would hazzard that having a dead KO3 and therefore being in a position where you have to fit a replacement, the KO4 would be the sensible choice (aslong as the prices are similar anyway!). What SPS settings were you running btw?

alright dave, i think it was running hb5 t5 which is a little high but the car was found to be superchipped when i had it revod and its got 60k on the clock now so i suppose its had most of that 60k running higher boost than standard, not complaining anyway as im used to breaking my cars :D

i will no doubt speak to various people before making my descision but a ko4 seems the most viable option as it will bolt straight on

For

If you keep an eye on ebay ive seen new genuine ko3s really cheap.
