falicia 1.3 1997 noisy diff

Featured Replies

Hello, i have falicia 1997 55.000 miles.

I have a noise that has been getting steadily worse over last few weeks, it starts at about 40mp and get louder after that, it does not matter what gear i am in either. Does this sound like noisy differential or something else?

cheers

Describe the noise - what's it related to? Road speed? Is there anything that you do that changes it?

Thanks for reply, the noise is like a loud humming, as said it starts at about 40mph and get worse as i go faster, only going slower makes it better.

Humming? Does it get worse when you're going round a corner (left or right)?

It not a wheel bearing so you count that out. I know this for sure.

cheers

How?

If it's road speed related then it could be the diff bearings if you're sure it's not the wheel bearings. I've had plenty of people tell me their gearbox/diff was knackered when it was actually wheel bearings, mind!

Thanks for reply but i was in the motor trade for 10 years when younger and have many a wheel bearing go. The usual trick of turning in a circle when on full lock normally shows up a wheel bearing, plus it only pass mot few weeks back and my mechanic says it is not a wheel bearing as well.

cheers

bet it is  . the felly bearings are cassette ones and hardly ever fail badly enough to hear at low speeds or feel any play in them, especially low enough that you would hear it going round in a circle.

i've prob changed over 80 felicia and fav wheel bearings and not one diff bearing in 18 years at a skoda specialist.

jack it up with both wheel off the ground (safely) and run it up blocking one wheel at a time so only one can turn (dont do it for long tho as it is giving the diff gears a bit of stick)

I use a long tube to go under the spring seat and gently slow the tyre down while some one keeps a constant speed on the engine

Full lock won't allow you to drive at a decent speed, and it's load put on the bearings that will show up as noise - full lock is for checking CVs and the like. I've had noisy bearings that have passed MOTs, for that matter - indeed the rears on my Recce Felly were very noisy at about 50, but it passed the MOT without even an advise on anything.

Hello, thanks for replies. I will give the wheel off ground method a check.
