Am I right in thinking that it's ok to fit a larger battery (with increased cold cranking power)? For example, would the battery from 2.5 TDi be ok on a 1.9 or would it put more stress on the alternator?

I'm considering buying one of these for my Superb.

Get the largest capacity battery that will fit in the space. The larger the battery the less work the alternator has to do, less is taken from the battery starting so the alternator has less work to replace the discharge. The manufacturers fit the smallest power battery they can get away with, the results of which are all too evident on the forum, note how many owners batteries are going flat. Retired MV Tech.

Only risk is burning out the starter.... but only a real risk if you try and defy physics and crank and crank ....... and crank....
