I think the wrong model number has been posted, as when I google Coolpix 4200 it takes me to six year old reviews. Wikipedia (the fount of all knowledge and truth, after all!!) gives the release date as Feb 2004, which makes it a bit more than a year old!

Fair enough, I stand corrected, my apologies.

Is the replacement as good, 'cos those Nikons are cracking little cameras?

Just sold my (even older) Nikon Coolpix 2100 and it was still going strong. Like the OP, I just sold it (for a tenner due to age) due to getting a replacement. Got given a Coolpix 7600 as the previous owner just got a Canon EOS 450D.... :D Nikons do seem to go on forever and produce good shots for those who are not bothered about DSLR quality etc.

My new camera is OK, haven't had much chance to use it yet but it certainly looks the part.

The 4200 has been with me to all sorts of places and I've had some great snaps on it. Can't recommend highly enough :)

I'd say it's the perfect camera to just whack in your pocket and take anywhere, if you sit on it it's fine and if you drop it it'll survive!
