Poor MPG Octavia MKII

Featured Replies

Hi

I brought an 57 plate octavia 1.9 tdi last year with 23000 miles on the clock, .

I am a taxi driver but not heavy footed.

The best I have ever had out of it around town is 45MPG.

In the cold it goes down maybe 5MPG which I expect...

But now it has gone down lots. I can't get over 36 MPG around town.

What does make it better is booting it up a big hill and clearing the smoke (lots) and once its cleared out it is ok till the next shift.

I've had somebody put it on the computer and it said a glow plug was down but I put a new set in and it didn't improve. It now has 44000 on the clock.

It has been serviced ect.

Any ideas please?

Cheers Andy

Loss of MPGS can be several things. A blocked / dirty air filter etc. But my guess would be a faulty Mass Air Flow Meter. Might be worth removing it and giving it a clean with electrical contact cleaner to see if it is? A faulty Mass Airflow Meter may not throw up any fault codes like mine didnt on my Fabia VRS. Cleaned it and it did improve things, but I decided to change it and all was good again :)

I only get about 38mpg in town regardles of the weather. I'd be delighted to get 46mpg.

Checked out the official urban mpg in the manual as a starting guide. A 1.9l 5 speeder claims 6.3l/100km urban. Which translated to 44.84mpg.

So there you are.....

The OP has a 1.9 PD105 though. Which should be more economical.

I'd check MAF and air filter as already said. The amount of soot when accelerating might also be a clue. It might need a few more journeys when the engine and turbo get a bit more exercise. Clear the cobwebs away, if you will....

Hi and thankyou for the replies...

Sorry I didn't mention that I had a new airflow meter that was the first thing I tried after a new airfiler.

It seems strange to me that it gets better as my taxi shift goes on and I've cleared the exhaust out.

My mates who have the same model get 45-50 mpg when local taxiing. I would be happy with 45 like you say but its got worse now at approx 32ish

Cheers andy

Something else has to be amiss there. So there's no error codes logged at the moment?

Next I suppose I'd think about the turbo pipework, condition of the intercooler and fitment/tightness of the pipes. The soot output and it being better after a while is bugging me though, as if there's a problem it's generally consistent and wouldn't avail itself like this.

Is boost and performance of the turbo OK? No noticeable hesitation on boost or noticeable lack of power?

Hi Wardy,

Yes the turbo feels fine, it really is a torquey car many customers are impressed at how good it is, cant believe skoda could make something so good!! lol

I misunderstood. I thought that you were dissatisfied with 45mpg around town. But 36mpg or so does not seem too unreasonable from my experience of a PD100 Passat and my current Octavia.

Most of the taxi drivers i know get 45mpg, one gets 50+mpg but he does drive really steadily.

I have often thought of having a remap when i have some spare pennies!

I know mine is a different engine being a 2.0 litre TDi but at the moment most of mt journeys are very short 3 miles each way to and from work, plus a bit of pootling to shops etc and a short drive at the weekends. The drive to work takes me up a 1.5 mile steep hill on a fairly cold engine ( but I do coast down in the evenings) and currently my mpg is 30mpg. Not a lot of traffic in the morning as I start a bit later so miss the rush, same in the evening.

I'd be happier with 36mpg. Plus, you sure your mates aren't boasting about theirs? I always ask cabbies their mpg when ever I hire one. Never yet met one who actually can tell me exactly the mpg through working it out brim to brim. They always say a rough figure.

At 30mpg though i have had better petrol taxis, i know the onboard mpg computers arnt 100 % acurate but i have seen his over many miles and it shows 50 mpg or more.

Possibly its the injectors are badly coked up. Why not try using Millers diesel Ecomax or similar to clean them up. From the sound of it you will need to use it for 3 or 4 tanks worth or at double dose until the nozzles are clean.

Yeah I thought that and used the injector cleaner and used the better dieasel still the same, I read on hear that the place in Mansfield, Sharkfin, are good so I might take it their for them to have a look at.

I would wait for warmer weather and see how things pan out TBH....

Strange that MPG as I have the PD105 and I get a constant 55-58 round town all day long.

Does your engine get to normal running temp? I ask this because I had a Mk1 Octy tdi that had this sympton and it was the temp sensor which was faulty and the engine was over fueling hence lots of smoke on boost. Good luck hope you get it sorted.

I replaced a MAF with a non VAG one and my car ran awful until I purchased a VAG MAF, can you borrow a MAF from one of the other drivers and try it out?

Other sensors I have replaced which has changed how my car ran was the water temp sensor, not sure why but it changed how my car drove.....

e.g. Green Temp Sensor Golf TDI 1.9 2002

and

1.9 TDI PD 100bhp Owners - economy figures

Edited by lucy_t

Agree as lucy_t says also.Maybe worth changing the temp sensor as could be sending wrong to the ecu hence overfuelling. If i remember it was quite common fault on MK1 Tdi,s
