Help! Need Gearbox info! MK1 Octy vrs

Featured Replies

The Gearbox on my Mk1 Octy vrs has gone bang (again!) really having difficulty finding an affordable replacement! Are there any other VAG group cars that I can use the gearbox from? Golf? Bora? Leon? Audi A3? Also, does it have to have a specific part code or whatever?

As you can probably tell I know very little about the whole 'mechanical' thing, however my mechanic knows even less about the whole 'internet' thing, so I'm on here hoping for a little help!

(Must be relatively cheap though, the car's got 101k miles on it now, so it's not worth much any more, just need it to keep running til I can afford to get a new motor!)

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated

Thanx

You should be able to use the gearbox from most 1.8t cars (excluding 6 speed ones like LCR, TT etc).

Gearboxes have a 3 letter code i.e. EHA etc. Look on the sticker on the boot floor to find it. Ignore AUQ, that's your engine code.

Thanks, I've bandaged to find a scrap yard that's breaking a mk 1 vrs at the mo, he wants £350 for the 'box and although i'd hoped to get one cheaper, I'm seriously considering going for it... Cheers for the advice though...

Sorry, that should say "I've MANAGED to find a scrap yard" Bloody predictive text! ;]

He'll take less if you show him the cash! Trust me! Barter away...

What has gone wrong with the gearbox anyway? Did the crownwheel break free of the diff and eat the gearbox, or was it something else. Maybe get the bolt kit to replace the rivets on the crownwheel if this keeps happening.

What engine mods have you got (stage 2 or big turbo etc.), or what type of driving do you do (trackdays etc.)? Just wondering how you've broken 2 gearboxes within 100k!

could do with a good solution to this problem to. the car has done 133k and on its 4th box including original. when box no 2 went bang i bought a replacement and had the damaged one re-conditioned and stored it at my mates garage so no headache of trying to find another one if the problem happened again. box 3 had only been in the car for approx 2k miles and started making a grinding noise, i checked the gearbox oil and it was like metalic paint with chunks of swarf in the bottom. so gonna get it reconditioned and get rid of it i think.

I've seen an entire Octy 4x4 1.8T for nearly the amount you're looking at for a gearbox!

I'd be willing to go halves if someone had the storage and I could cannibalise other parts from it lol

£350 seems a lot. theres several on ebay for around £220-£270 delivered

You should really start a new thread, rather than resurrecting one that's over a year old. The moderators on the site don't tend to like people doing this.

As for the gearbox, was the 3rd one second hand? It may have been goosed before you even bought it.
