turning crankshaft on Superb Mk1

Featured Replies

Hi,

Finally got round to changing the cambelt on my 2003 1.9tdi Superb yesterday. All going well until I tryed to take the crankshaft auxillery drive pulley off. I needed a 6mm hex driver. Unfurtunately my set started at 7mm. so it's off to Machine Mart or Halfords to get a 6mm hex drive.

Moral of the story, Make sure you have ALL the right tools for the job before starting.

But my question is, I noticed that the crankshaft bolt looks like a start type bolt. Do i need a star socket to turn the crank to TDC?

Just on the right tools again, This is my third attempt at this job. the first two attempts where thwarted by rubbish quality T45 star bit made by Laser tools. The first one snapped when trying to removed the bolts for the lock assembly, the second one (replaced by Laser) also failed as it was soft as putty. One purchased from Halfords has faired better.

A 12 point 19 AF socket will turn the crank, but you could just push the car in top gear - assuming manual transmission. Turn crank bolt clockwise as you look at it only.

A comprehensive set of good tools is needed to work on these cars.
