Service recommendations...What would you do?

Featured Replies

As described in the title......It's time to service my car, and wanted everyone's opinion.

The car has had the timing belt done at 43k(along with a service) My question is what would you recommend?

I'm thinking;

Change Oil and filter - Not sure what grade though?

Change Spark plugs - Would you go for oem or aftermarket - Just wondered with it been remapped

Fuel filter?

Gear Box oil (is this separate or filled up with engine oil)

Me and my mechanic will be doing it all so won't have to be the set service from the stealers!

Just want your opinions guys, and what parts you'd use, and where you'd get them from.....Cheers!

Has anyone got any ideas? I know it's not the most interesting of topics....but I'd really appreciate the help!

I'm thinking;

Change Oil and filter - Not sure what grade though? Yes fully synthetic 5W40 or 5W30. I currently have Mobil 5W30 in mine This stuff

Change Spark plugs - Would you go for oem or aftermarket - Just wondered with it been remapped NGK BKR7E 4 of these if you don't mind changing them every 12 months. They are super cheap and are a colder rating by 1 over standard, which I was told is better for remapped turbos. You could get the Iridium ones which last longer, but I am happy to change mine more frequently for less cost

Fuel filter? Yes

Gear Box oil (is this separate or filled up with engine oil) This is separate and is probably a good idea too. Get it from the dealers (part GO60 726 A2 you will need 2 of them...) as it is cheap enough £5.81 inc vat is what I paid for each litre.

Thanks very much for your response tarmacsurfer. How often do you change the oil that you have? I'd looked at those spark plugs before as I'd heard that they were good for mapped engines.

Do the plugs come set up, ready with the correct spacing etc for the spark?

Hi again. I plan on doing mine every 5000 miles as I don't do that much mileage in it a year, but 10,000mls or once a year is the interval Skoda recommend...unless you are ragging it around, or doing lots of short journeys. Use a good quality oil to VW specs as per the website link I attached for the oil I am using.

The gap for the plugs should 0.7mm. I had to close the gap a bit on my set of NGK's. Your mechanic mate will know how to do this without damaging the plug core.

Change the air filter, skoda state 40k miles between changes and that is just stupid.

Why not also change all 4 filters, engine oil, check separate gearbox level (splined socket required) and power steering level.

Having a Fabia VRS (diesel) fixed service schedule, can't see it being any different logically than in a variable service.

Do all this on a yearly basis and have peace of mind.

You obviously want to keep your car up-to-scratch and so this would be my advice.

Good luck.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I change my oil and filter every 5000 miles, i bought a genuine set of from stealers a couple of months ago and they were 10 quid each retail,

I did gearbox oil aswell 17mm plug socket, easy to change and does make a difference

Thanks again for all the superb advice as always lads! Just hunting for parts now. Where's the best place to look?

Ebay is going to be my starting point

Why ebay?

Local TPS (genuine VW parts) or good quality motor factors parts are OK & have been for mine.

I just figured that it was a good place to start....but maybe not? I'll have a look at prices and call my local TPS tomorrow

How many litres of oil does the vRS need?

Its OK, but postage on stuff is a pain. Youll need 5l but it takes around 4.5l.

They should be OK or BKR7E with gap set at 0.7mm

Cheers! Like my personal advisor  will I have to change the gaps on these? (The one's i've just posted above?)

isnt TPS trade only ?

These guys do an oil filter and enough oil in a service pack, seems quite resonable?

On the note of changing the gearbox oil,

Are there any tutorials on how todo it?

isnt TPS trade only ?

Nope, at least not ours.
