hi, does anyone know what causes the exhaust back box to explode on a S reg skoda felicia. :wonder:

explosives? :giggle:

i expect the silencer has collapsed internally due to wear and tear and caused a blockage in the tailpipe, the pressure has to go somewhere, so it just explodes! you can normally tell when they are getting bad because you get long strings of what looks like horses hair coming out the tailpipe

thanks, but would the cat have anything to do with it at all, would it be damaged? :wonder:

it was a bit sluggish at 1st then after about 5 miles driving i stopped at some lights and when i started to pull off there was a big bang so i pulled over and saw my back box tore open along the seam.

would there be any other damage? :S

I assume that with the back box exploding it bore the brunt of the pressure. Unless there are any other outward signs of damage along the exhaust then it should be ok. The back box was obviously the weak point.

Just take the back box off then start it up and hold a cloth other the pipe. If there is no air leaking out anywhere then I'd say you're ok!

 Thanks Phil i'll give it a go the weekend, been out in it today and the performance was better than before :giggle:

lot's of people looking for a ferrari

I'm not suprised. If it was blocked to the extent where the pressure has bust the back box then the poor engine must have been struggling a bit!

You mean looking for the Ferrari then being sadly disappointed when they saw a Felly with a holy back box!? hehe

Interesting that you should talk about 'horse hair', about a year/ 18 monthes ago a clump of something kept flicking into my vision in the near side mirror whilst on the M27, i thought i'd run something over so hit the hazards and pulled over. I gingerly approached the rear end to find what looked like the remains of a cat (without the blood) coming out of the tail pipe. I was mistified how the poor thing had got in there and wondered if its missing head, etc was still inside the exhaust. A few days later i noticed more had come out when i parked up at work. I didn't mention it to anyone in case it was their cat. One of my workmates had a felly too, and by chance i overheard another workmate telling him his exhaust was banjaxed if a load of hair came of the end! Incidentally the afore mentioned experiences had no ill effect on either car...

You see it on all types of car when the baffles are collapsing. Definitely not restricted to the Felicia :)
