Cars Dead

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Went to start the car and the dash lights flicker and there's lots of clicking from the dashboard!

Engine won't turn over at all...

Electrics all work with ignition on though and I only drove the car less then an hour ago!

Any ideas...I'm thinking alternator or starter motor?

Check the big fuses on top of the battery for signs of corrosion or failure. Also the large cable to the alternator is prone to failing too.

As above, failing that, dead battery.

Dead battery, bad earth lead connection (to engine), bad starter positive connection, dirty battery terminals etc.

Possibility that the starter has shorted to ground, but not very likely.

Happened to me exactly the same, turned out to be the fuse on top of the battery, the one on the black lead going to the alternator. Cost a couple of quid for a fuse and terminal end(which you need to change or it'll happen again) from Skoda dealer. It did also kill the battery so had to get that replaced (£25 thanks to the AA).

Been good ever since

Thanks for the replies..luckily I have AA homestead so will get them on the case in the morning.

I've never had any starting problems with the car or any problems mechanically and having driven it twice today already I was a bit baffled that the car just gave up the ghost..it's now lost all power electrically so pretty sure a new battery will be needed

Did you manage to sort it?
