can i convert the rear drum brakes into disc brakes?

Featured Replies

dear friends can i convert the rear drum brakes into disc brakes ?were do i get them any suggestions please .

i cant see why not, could be costly though so it depends what sort of money you want to spend. you could look in scrap yards for a crashed Vrs or 1.8t with rear discs and have them away but it would be worth checking if you'd need hibs and things as well for mounting the discs in place of the drums.

Any particular reason you'd want to do this? I know drum brakes get a little smelly when you use them a lot, but they tend to work well for fairly normal driving.

When you drive it in a more sporty manner it could become a factor I guess, but then the cost is pretty high for the relatively small benefit

sounds like you have never done it.....raceing or not you can never have enough stopping power...and changing the rear drums to disks the diffrence is astounding!! i converted my Punto rear drum brakes to punto GT rear disk brakes and stopped so much quicker.... i know some one who changed there focus's brakes to the st170 setup and astra that chnaged to the GSI set up and they have never looked back...

(with out looking) just going on past experinces Ie the above.... its a case of taking the drums off and plonking on the disks.... maybe changing the hand brake cable....and a few other bits...

i say go for it...oh and i havnet mentioned it looks sooooo much better then old rusty drums :D

My point wasnt that they aren't better - but imho it's better to buy the right car in the first place rather than spend a load of cash making it better :)

The upgrade means you void warranty, it makes your car modded for insurance purposes as well. All-in-all it's hardly worth it imho.

It sure looks better - no argument there :D

It's up to you of course at the end of the day, but personally I'd try and swap the car for the one which has the right brakes to start with :D

So, any links to people who have done the swap? I'm planning to go ahead with this as well, so would love to know what exactly has to be changed.
