Bit of a pointless topic but as of last week my second steering rack started piddling out power steering fluid all over the road :(

I had a new rack back in May of last year and therefore thought that the leak must have been from the pump. I had it booked in for this week with an independent to have a look at what I thought was a suspension knock and they diagnosed that there is a lot of play in the NS track rod and that this was causing my leak and probably the knocking as well as they were able to rock the NS wheel left and right by hand

Luckily my local Skoda dealer who fitted the rack told me that parts are covered for 2 years but I'm not sure if that means I need to fork out for the labour myself :( I guess I'll find out tomorrow when it goes in to be looked at.

Just wanted to vent my bad luck as when I got the rack done I was told it was very rare for them to fail and now my one has gone again! Being an exchange part though I assume they go back for refurbishment so I got someone else's old rack with a new coat of paint on?

it is unusual for a rack to only last a year, i think you were just unlucky tbh, an exchange re-con steering rack is not just re-painted and sent out, it will have brand need pinion gears etc, just as good if not better than an original item

Yeah I was just being facetious about slapping a coat of paint on but I would be interested to hear how often a recon rack ends up failing again compared to a new one.

At the moment it is just an inconvenience but if I have to shell out the labour (and I get the distinct feeling that I will) I am going to be rather narked. :(

Well the verdict is that the rack is knackered and will be replaced at no cost

I'm pretty chuffed. I've had my bank balance well and truly smashed by the thing over the last year so this was a nice let off!
