Strange Humming Noise 2010 Octavia

Featured Replies

I have relatively new 2010 octavia 1.6 TDI elegance (9600 miles) which has developed a strange symptom. It has an intermittent humming noise when driving at 60 mph plus on the motorway. It sounds like something rubbing against another component, and seems to be coming from the front passenger side of the car, although this could obviously be from elsewhere. I am going back to the dealer in the next few days but wondered if anyone else had experienced similar things. There is no juddering of the steering wheel when the noise occurs, and performance appears fine.

I've had something similar on another make/model, and it was an out of round tyre that was near 1 wear bar. I think it only showed up at speed because that was the only time it got loud enough to hear.

Alternatvely, maybe your car doesn't know the words? ;)

This sounds similar to a fault I had with my vRS. I would get a odd humming noise and a vibration could also be felt through the floor and especially the clutch pedal when driving at 63mph or above. It was eventually diagnosed as a faulty nearside wheel bearing and fixed under warranty.

You say eventually - how many trips to dealer before diagnosed?

It was fixed within 3 visits to the dealer but did take some persuasion to get the dealer to investigate the fault fully. Originally they checked the car over then sent me away and said come back when it gets worse, I was not happy with this suggestion so made my thoughts clear to the dealer.

I was insistent the fault was a faulty wheel bearing and they were insistent that it was not. I was right.
