Power Steering Query

Featured Replies

Hullo fellas,

Just wondering... after driving the felly and jumping in my Dads 307 shortly thereafter... my God, you don't half appreciate how easy the 307's steering is. However, this pertains to my question, which is: I have stiff power steering and as such when turning, it whirrs alot (more than sounds ordinary) and occasionally creaks. The creaks may be down to the poor condition of the various steering bushes, but the main thing is it feels stiff. The alternator seems to make a fair bit of noise and on inspection, it feels more or less knackered anyway, so I'm going to replace it. So, does it sound like I might need a new power steering pump, as I may aswell replace that while I'm on with the belt?

JJ

On a side note... I've drawn out a list of things that need doing on the old girl, and it is as follows, in no particular order: alternator belt, timing belt (this might be OK, but its the original belt and its done nearly 100k miles), knock sensor (whch is currently completely missing?!), oil & filter, front wheel bearing kits, front tyres (pair), tie rod ends, rear damper bushes, clutch kit (slipping badly under harsh acceleration), tailgate (rusted through, curently covered with duct tape xD), rotor arm, HT leads, sparkplugs, exhaust mount, brake shoes... £522 all in, I make it. Bottom line is: I paid £360 for it, the interior is in good nick - is it worth spending all this money?? OR should I just run it into the ground?

Cheers again, JJ

if the pump is whiring it might be just because there is air in the circuit... jack up the car so both front wheels are off the floor and with the engine running keep turning it from lock to lock and holding it for a few seconds at each lock with the cap off the power steering resovoir. this should purge all the air out of the circuit

Also, check that the PAS oil is full before and after the bleeding. Similarly, if the drive belt is slipping, that won't improve the efficiency of the PAS.
