Early signs of DMF failure?

Featured Replies

I have a Octy VRS DSG CR with just over 25K on the clock. I am not sure if this noise has been present since new, perhaps others can help me out here. When cruising along at relatively low revs and I accelerate very gently, I can detect a faint vibrating grating noise over the engine note. This is not always present. Is my DMF the culprit? If not what else could be the cause?

I'm surprised about this, given its DSG and also the mileage covered. It could be a defective part of course.

The DSG system should in effect never cause this problem, because it should change down to bring the engine revs into a more appropriate area for acceleration.

I'd get it booked into a dealer, or better - take one of the techs out when you call in - to highlight the issue.

What sort of revs are we talking here?

Can't immediately think of what else would cause this. But DMF failure, or beginnings of failure, is most obvious as a judder under acceleration. Especially when trying to accelerate when the turbo's off boost (which isn't recommended anyway, as it can lead to premature DMF failure and isn't good for the clutch either). This is because the internals of the DMF are not able to dampen the vibrations caused.

Noticable at about 2500 rpm. I DO sometimes get a slight judder when the DSG 'Gets it wrong' and is in to high a gear when I am at a slow speed. This is VERY occasional and is not dramatic. I seem to remember it has always done this though.

I'd get the DSG system checked out you really shouldn't be seeing these sorts of issues with it.

2500 also sounds quite high to begin to notice the judder. It would be most noticeable if you tried to accelerate fairly keenly, from say 1700-1800. Again, this is with a manual transmission.

Could be a mechantronics issue?

Sorry I was not very clear with the description. I get the noise at about 2500. The judder is much lower about 1700, but this is very infrequent, and is not that bad to be honest.

Hope that clears it up. Either way I will get it to a garage, as it is still under warranty.

No worries. Any noise that you believe is related to the DSG transmission would need investigating really. For your piece of mind alone

Best of luck getting it sorted emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Mine was doing this so I went to my dealer and they "re-set" the box. It's been fine since.
