What 4x4 for around £2000?

Featured Replies

SWMBO changed her Fabia vRS for a 4.2 (2nd gen) 2l vvti Rav4 and loves the Rav. She uses it for moving water barrels/hay etc etc around the fields for the horses all year round.

Whilst the 4wd system has prooved satisfactory for us living in the Peak District it is only really suited to soft roading activities as the ground clearance is woeful.

Comfort wise it's brilliant and its prooved to be very rugged too. In the 2 1/2 years of ownership the only fault we've had was the drivers side rear door sensor and it only needed a clean and working fine again.

Prior to moving house she was averaging 29mpg on her 15mile commute to work (Motorway/B Roads) and now her car only gets used for the short journeys it still averages 23-25mpg

When we were looking to sell SWMBO's Rav for a 7 seater earlier in the year we were very supprised at how much they have depreciated & how long they were on the market for without being sold so you never know, you might be able to get one at a bargain price.

Daihatsu Fourtrak 2.8D?

Very solid and reliable if a little basic and old now. You'll easily get one for under 2k.

Rugged an reliable till old age but beware gearboxes bearing start go in later life - replaced my 'box with a second hand one (had done about 80K) at 95K and then that when after another 25K. Finding 2nd hand boxs is like looking for hen teeth as this is apparantly a common problem.

Thanks for all the replies.

Put a deposit on a ...... Mazda Tribute 3.0 V6 with all the kit this morning.

Only done 23000 miles since 2002, older gentleman used to drive it, but full service 8 stamps, some with only 500 miles since services.

Went to see a Musso 2.9 TD yesterday, nice cars, but there just isn't any near me that is good condition. The 2.9 TD sounded sweet and smooth.
