Planning to buy a new car - I like the Skoda Superb

Featured Replies

Hello, Skoda Superb owners,

I like to buy a car new and keep it for 10 years or more, and am now planning to order a new car in the next few months.

My last two cars were VW Passat Estates, but with the last one VW reliability had slid, and I have been so disappointed with the reliability that I will not buy another Passat.

I think a petrol engine is more appropriate as I do a low mileage, about 8,000 miles per year. I need an automatic gearbox as an old knee injury can make repeated clutch operation painful. I need a roomy driver’s seat and leg well as I am 6 feet 6 inches tall and have long legs.

My wife also has a knee problem which is making me look at cars like the Mercedes B and the VW Golf Plus as their higher seats make them easier to get in and out of.

My favourite so far is the Skoda Superb Estate (1.8 TSI 160PS 7spd DSG), despite having lower seats, and I am considering:

Trim levels - S or SE?

Park Assist?

Cruise control?

Acoustic rear parking sensors?

Rear side airbags?

Chrome effect protective side strips? (See accessory booklet) – I am unable to understand why the S and SE models do not already have protective side strips.

Colour? – White as it the safest and I cannot understand why anyone should pay £440 for metallic or pearl paintwork. If bright yellow were available I would plump for it.

I am open to advice.

Hi and welcome aboard.

Welcome :)

I'd go for SE, Cruise, Rear parking sensors, and Rosso Bruno :)

Things are coming along.

I had a test drive in a Skoda SE Estate 1.8 TSI DSG last week and liked it very much.

My test drive in a Mercedes-Benz B Class left me unenthused.

My test drive in a VW Golf Plus impressed me more than the Merc, but it is a small car, and expensive.

My wife looked around the Superb SE Estate today and liked it – this is a major tick in the box!

Inclined now to buy the SE, not the S, nor the Elegance.

Undecided on colour. Perhaps it is worth paying the extra for a metallic silver rather than white?

Undecided on Park Assist, will it be of any real use?

Superb is a stunningly good car and Skoda reliability, well just google it and look at the surveys like JD power.

If you were impressed with the Golf Plus and are looking at something higher for ease of entry and exit then have a look at the yeti too. Like the golf it's small but I have switched from an Octavia and older relatives have commented on the fac that it's easier to get in and out of. Petrol lead times are now down to sensible levels it seems too. Just don't expect a superb sized boot

Funnily enough my wife looked at the Yeti which was next to the Superb in the showroom, and we discussed what you have said here, but our preference is for the Superb, and she found it almost as good for the getting in and out.

good stuff. I am on my tenth Skoda and the worst issue I have ever had was an odometer which jammed back when these things were mechanical, it was three months out of warranty but Skoda agreed it shouldn't have happened and fixed it for free.

Enjoy whichever one you go for

Welcome to Briskoda.

Check out what your dealer can get in an SE Plus spec ,they may have a good deal on available stock.

I personally would go for the park assist , specially with a car so big, it makes life so easy, I have front & rear parking sensors on my vRS having gone from a city sized car to this I am now very glad I did.

Always get the spec you want & can afford, or it will niggle you that you didnt get it.

When i when to pick my Octavia vRS up last Xmas there was a Superb Diesel ( 170 i think) SE+ ( boot/hatch) going for £19999 drive off the forecourt & it was unregistered. I had just picked up my car for a smidge over £1000 less.

Today I ordered a Superb SE Estate 1.8 TSI DSG in brilliant silver with rear side airbags, Park Assist, and chrome effect side moulding.

Feeling good.

Well done, a very nice car indeed, and park assist is great!

Congrats - nice choice, you'll be feeling even better when you get it. I'm into day 2 of mine and loving it already, a truly fantastic vehicle.
