Fitting Speaker Surrounds - Front Door Speakers

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Im looking at fitting some after market door speakers. From reading on here im needing some speaker surrounds. Ive seen the following on Ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-6-5-18mm-MDF-Speaker-Spacer-Rings-Surround-CD-/160619381880?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item2565a94478#ht_1402wt_1270

and im just wandering how it works. Do the MDF panels fit around the metal cone in the door that holds the speakers? Is the MDF for the screws?

Sorry for any Noddy questions im just trying to get my head round it all.

Thanks Ben

The factory speakers and their "mounts/cones" are one piece. You basically drill the rivets out and the speaker+mount falls out. Having removed the speaker/mount, you want to fit your speakers. You need a mount/stand-off/spacer to space the speaker away from the door.

Golf mk4 plastic spacers are ideal. Pretty sure have to make new mounting holes though. Also door card can be difficult to get back on properly.

...though you can buy MDF ones instead.

Whatever you do, buy speakers that mount to around 60mm, 62mm max. Any deeper and you will probably have "issues".

I had problems getting the door cards back on, a lot of which was due to the sound deadening I also installed. I did a felt tip test to make sure the door card was not pressing on my new speakers and it wasn't luckily, it was just the new adaptors mixed with the storage compartment slightly obstructed the bottom of the door card. If you put the screws in the bottom of the door first and then push the bottom clips into place it should secure ok. Even less of a problem if you have electric windows, mine are manual so occasionally my window winder pops off whilst i'm winding the window up and down :dull: I'm not sure if any old MDF rings will work, you may have to make some yourself if you want to go down that route simply because you have to convert from 5.25" at the door to 6.5" for the speaker. Easy enough to adapt a 6.5" ring with a little time and imagination though.
