Snapped auxiliary belt !

Featured Replies

Hi. Can anyone tell me how long could I drive without aux belt, with no electrical components switched on ?

Not to far, you have steering that you can't turn off along with the engine.

Thanks Guru...I know I will struggle with the steering....but do you think it will get me the 2 miles to the garage ?

I would have thought so.

In free moving traffic I once did 23 miles in Golf IV (1.9 TDI) when the aux belt snapped. It snapped whilst the engine was running, so I didn't need to start it and it didn't have electric PAS, but it got me to my destination.

In free running traffic you might manage 2 miles, but as the battery drains, any movement of the steering wheel will drag the voltage right down and that might cause the ECU to switch off. I'd be tempted to disconnect the main PAS cable from fuse 2 (80A) on the E box.

I've got a feeling without an output signal from the alternator the steering ECU might to even power up anyhow.
