private reg plates

Featured Replies

hi all,

looking for some advice and help with regards to private plates.

when buying a car that has had a private plate on it the garage has put its original plates back on and sent the log book back to the dvla to get it changed back onto the original reg number.

the buyer of the car has a private plate to put on the car from his trade in but because the log book is at the dvla they cant change the tax disk etc to the new private plate. so the trade in car will get put back to its original reg plate.

what is the best way to get round this? does the plate need to get put on retention until the log book comes back?

its all confusing to me :confused:

I have just done a similar thing with my recent car swap.

The garage where I got my new one from did the transfer for me...they took both log books mot and tax discs to the local dvla office and they did the change. If the car u are buying has had it's log book sent off you may have to wait till it returns before you can transfer your reg. If you can't wait then you may have to put your reg on retention till the paper work arrives.
