towbar

Featured Replies

hi all, got a 54 plate octavia, just bought a towsure towbar with electrics off fleabay for £25! bonus, now just got to work out fitting it, i take it the bumper has to come off, but will it need cutting at all?? also do i need to drill the chassis anywhere? the towbar didnt come with any instructions, but at the price i wasnt going to not buy it, did the wife pug 206 last year and that was very easy! under an hour! so if anyone has any tips, mucho grassyass! lol

The only bit of cutting you should need to do is on the underside of the bumper. Yes you will need to remove the bumper to gain access to the rear crash structure, it should then be a simple case of unbolting the existing cross member and replacing with the new mounting structure for the towbar.

Think of any brand name (Westfalia for example) and search their website for instructions - they are identical. Once the bumper is off there is a steel bumper underneath that needs to come out. Two holes in the chassis are revealed and the two legs of the towbar fit in there. The four bolts (two either side) 16mm head fit through pre drilled holes in the chassis and into the two bar legs.

They torque to 50NM IIRC.

The exhaust has to drop a few inches to get access on the nearside bolts. Then the  heat sheild is secured by "star washers" these break when you pull them and will need replacing part # "Clamping Washer N 907 965 02".

There is a good guide here I used http://octavia-vrs.c.../towbar-install

Have you tried any garages down meadow lane?

The longest part will be removing the rear bumper as its time consuming removing the panels in the boot, once the bumper is off the actually fitting of the towbar shouldn't take too long. The cutout should be marked on the inside of the bumper but do a trial fit just to make sure that it looks OK before cutting
