brand or not?

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been done to death but I really couldn't find opinions specific enough!

So I've always had it in my head I wanted to replace the standard head unit with a double din since I've owned my little furby, and now I have started a part-time delivery job, there is a genuine need for a sat-nav.

I have about £400 coming my way (someone finally paying me the money they've owed me for a couple of years!) so really starting to give this some thought.

Now normally I don't believe in cutting corners when it comes to technology, but having spent the last few weeks looking into this, I'm really stuck on what to do.....

The head unit must have a removable fascia, so I appreciate I have limited my options as there simply aren't many on the market. The only viable route to take is either a cheapy Ebay unit, or either a Kenwood or JVC, which start at about £550.

I don't really want to have to put any extra money into this, but I really am struggling to go against my morals and settle for the cheaper, non-branded unit, rather than pay approx £200 more for a branded one, then have to buy the iphone lead..... but what would you do?!?!?

I would buy two things rather than one. One tom-tom and a very decent 1DIN head unit and probably even an iPod for the same money...

Consider that the Fabia's head unit isn't in the best of positions for making regular glances at it to check directions.

Yeah I have considered the tom tom route but really don't want the messy wires.... I think trying to hard wire it would be a ball ache... If you even could?!

I did think about a single din flip up unit instead of the double din to try and deal with the issue you rightly pointed out, but I don't like the look of those..... plus some of these cheap double din units have moveable face plate so this should help, but the branded units I've been looking at doesn't, so another thing in favour of the cheap unit as I see it.
