The ever illusive Octy Mk1 ECU ......

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Today I wanted to access my ECU............Now, I appreciate that the windscreen wipers need to be taken off, and that they are not in these pics, this was just a test run, and windscreen wipers apart, I just cannot for the life of me understand how that skuttle panel could possibly come off when it appears to be attached to the bottom of the windscreen!

So here's a pic of my engine bay, looking across the skuttle panel sideways (as you can see I have removed the rubber seal thing and slightly raised one half of the skuttle panel:-

NB... the letter 'D' is missing from the word 'Windscreen' above. We apologise for any inconvenience or offence this may have caused. :sun:

....clearly I'm completely ignorant to the procedure that needs to be done, so if any of the genii or experts would like to fill me, I'd be much obliged!

Cheers. :)

Its clipped to the bottom of the windscreen mate, Start at one end or in the middle and should pull up. The first time you take it off its very tight. Its not too bad after that. You need to pull directly away from the car(upwards). Hope this helps

Ah thanks mate..... so what I thought was a seal is actually just that the panel is closely clipped on...... gotcha!

I feel more confident to take the wipers off now that there's a chance I can actually get that panel off!

....and is the ECU iside a plastic case or something? ...... the thing I can see inside looks plastic rather than the steel cased ECUs you see on eBay etc..... :)

Cheers.

Yeh will pull off mate, Dont use anything to prise it off, Dont want to risk cracking screen!

Ecu is metal cased with plastic sockets on the front, this is what you can see when you peep through. Once you get scuttle and wipers off you need to unplug ecu by pulling out clips and plug will come off as you are doing this. Move plugs to the side and if you look at the bracket the ECU is in there is catch. You need to move this and simply pull the ECU out, Again will be quite tough first time. Sounds complicated but once you get wipers and scuttle off its easy to see how it comes out.

Not much to add really to whats been said, other than you will find you need a bit of jiggery pokkery to get the scuttle panels out or back in around the corners of the bonnet, but the plastic is fairly flexible so can be distorted beyond its normal profile without too much problem. Also use the opportunity to clear out debris from the drain plugs down each front corner of the pleum chamber!

As mentioned the plastic cowling just needs gentle tug from up the windscreen to get it to unclip.

Tip to remove wipers is to first mark winscreen with tape where wiper meets the windscreen(so to get them to fit in same place on spline when reinstalled. Also soak wiper nuts with WD40 and lift wiper arm off window then undo nuts as this take strain off the spline and makes them easier to remove.

here you can see the ECU

I've just changed my ecu and managed to do it without removing the scuttle panel as I didn't have a puller for the wipers and they were on solid so I just removed the rubber seal on the bulkhead and gently lifted the front edge of the scuttle and managed to keep it wedged up while I swapped the ecu.

Thanks guys.

Just two more questions:-

1). Just to clarify, should I be pulling the skuttle 'up' towards the top of the windscreen (in the direction of the windscreen), or 'out', away from the windscreen, to detach it from the windscreen? (just don't want to damage it).

Eg.......... BLUE arrow direction, or GREEN arrow direction below?

2). Once I'm in, is anything (bolts, screws, plugs, etc) keeping the ECU in, short of just pulling it out by hand?

Thanks for the pics, really helpful

Green arrow :-)

You need to unplug the ECU to get it out. There is a clip on the outside of each plug. As you pull it the plug will come off the ecu. Then use a screwdriver to release clip holding the ECU to the metal bracket.

Thanks, I read that post, but being pictureless it didn't quite get me there (and probably me being thick).... but the above info & pics has nailed it
