Insurance quotes... how low will they go...

Featured Replies

thought I'd share this story....

I have just bought a motorhome and had been shopping around for insurance. Obvoiusly there is less choice of insurers as its more specialised, however there is a few to choose from. One was safeguard (part of Swintons), they seem to be one of the best known. Anyway they quote cover but only with builtin UK/EU recovery (which I didnt want) they quoted £442. As I didnt want AA cover they offered to pass over to another sister company Scenic, who quoted £345 without it. So after getting a few more quotes decided the Scenic's was the best and decided to ringback.

As a self confessed scrooge I wasnt going to use the number given (0845..) I looked up on saynoto0870 for an alternative landline number! Bingo!! Leeds number so used that (no cost) :)

Anyway, a lady answered straight away and I said calling about Motorhome quote... so she redirected us, not thinking, I never said Scenic (why should I?) another lady answered after a min, said I was calling about an existing quote and I have a quote number, "no need" the reply, just "whats you postcode".....spent 10 mins going through confirming all my details to when she finally said "OK thats £442 then".. Ughh!

Penny dropped, was speaking to safeguard and not scenic! Assuming I would just get passed over, she said she'd try and get a better quote even though it would include breakdown.. came back with £374 (not bad!) but still dearer. Pushed my luck and thinking can't be bothered going through all the details again... asked can you match Scenic's quote.. a min later.. OK how about £345 (to be precise 6p cheaper) but with better cover and breakdown etc...

So a £97 saving from last weeks quote?? So how much are these companies ripping us off!

My moral now is shop around and push your luck :)

Nowadays when I'm paying for anything anywhere in person I always ask if there's a percentage add on for using cedit card, if the answer is no then I ask what the discount is for cash and if their not going to give me a discount for cash I pay with credit card as it's going to cost them 1.5 or 2% so they're actually losing out, I usually end up getting some amount of discount :)
