Airbag Best Before dates

Featured Replies

Please--where do I find my Airbag Best Before dates?

I would not eat it!:rofl::rofl:

Obviously they're clued up, but it's interesting that the same type of charge that I would assume to be in these is used in the automatic inflation devices we wear for water rescue at work and they have a change by date on.

;) PFDs use a Co2 canister which is punctured to inflate the vest - it is in no way similar to the car airbag......

Ah, that would explain it then. I knew what was in the PFD's but wasn't sure how the airbags worked: kinda figured they MUST have some sort of stored charge cylinder to fill the bag.

The Torygraph might be correct. On the other hand it was 15 years on my parents' 1999 VW Golf, and it's still 15 years in the Handbook of my 2008 Octavia. If you had the money and inclination to change the airbags on a 15 year old car, you would find it cheaper to buy something newer.

Have you been cooking again..............!

Skoda UK used to say 14 years. The life of the sodium azide ignitors has been 15 years since 1998 (when airbags became mandatory in all cars sold in the US). The one year difference was to account for any difference in the ignitor date of manufacture and the manufacture/registration of the car.

Bosch and other manufacturers are now reviewing this advice with the NHTSA to see if the life expectancy can be safely increased to 20 years.
