New head unit - mic and usb wires?

Featured Replies

Hope somebody can help me. Just bought a new head unit that has a rear usb cable and a microphone. How do I get the microphone from behind the dash all the way to somewhere where people can hear me clearly? I looked for ways to route it right and down but couldn't see anywhere to put it? Same goes for the usb cable which I want to route to the left in to the glove box, but other than taking out the glove box light I see no way of routing it in? I might take the glove box out and have a go that way. The microphone is the one I'm most confused / concerned about.

Really hope someone can help! I've installed it and swapped the live wires over and put the aerial booster on ok. It's a brilliant unit for the money, JVC kd-x50bt

I've routed my mic to by the driver knee position which is the most simplest to get to its stuck just under the vent location control if you feel around under there there is a gap at the back which goes into the hu void so you can pull the wire through. Others have took the glovebox out and the routed the wire behind, up the a pillar on passenger side then along to by the curtesy light.

USB pass mine was front mounted on the pioneer I fitted.

You will need a trim piece from the dealers as well to go above the new hu and below the heater switch it's about £3. Don't buy from anywhere else as they don't fit

My mic is above my rear view mirror, but it took some doing!

The control box for my HU is under the carpet on the passenger floor, so mic comes from their, up around the left of the dash (pushed cable in with spudger), under A-pillar trim and then tucked inside the edge of the headlining until it get to the mirror.

There's also an OEM mic mounting point in the interior light.

Run the mic wire up the left side of the dash, push the wire in with a plastic

knife or scraper so it can't be seen over the top of the dash.

Then run it up the left A pillar to the roof lining, then run it along the front

edge of the rooflining. Then either stick the mic to the screen next

to the rear view mirror or remove the interior light and take out the foam

block behind the mesh and mount it there,

(Using pieces of the foam block to keep the mic still)

Putting it in the light is the tidiest way to install overall.

As for the usb lead, theres a small triangle of plastic on the R/H side

of the interior of the glove box toward the rear. (Behind the glovebox light)

It can easily be bent to one side to allow the usb lead into the glovebox

without having to cut a hole at all. It can also then be removed at a later

date without leaving behind any damage.

I've just taken a hands free kit and a usb leaded stereo out of mine

(I installed them too) to refit the factory radio ready for the sale of my car.

Thanks guys, I will have a go when I get off work.

How do I go about placing the cable under the A pillar and roof lining? Do I need to unclip the A pillar trim and do I need to pull down the roof lining to route the cable? This is the part I hate the most as I don't want to snap any clips on the panels etc...

A pillar just pulls off.

Then the roof lining you can pull down by hand. Only do it just enough to push the cable up into it.

Hardest part I found was getting all the cables being the stereo!

How do I actually get the mic wire from behind the Head Unit up on top of the dash though? I could route it in to the glove box, if I can find that little triangle you are talking about, but then I'd need to be able to route it through the left side of the glove box and up towards the dash and A Pillar.

Arghhhh this is so awkward, never had a car before that was so difficult to do a HU install.

Take glove box out route it behind. Plus whilst it's out it's easier to tuck wire behind hu out of the way

Ok good stuff, I think once I've taken the glove box out everything, fingers crossed, should fall in to place.

To remove the glove box, is it just the 5 T20 Torx screws. I assume to do this, open the glove box, remove the 3 Torx screws at the top and the then there's 2 under the lid?

Thanks for all the help guys, I was seriously thinking about paying somebody to do this one, but hopefully if I get a bit of time I should be able to figure it out with this info to hand.

Oh, is that what that is? I always thought it was something to do with the interior alarm sensors!

I think that's it just be careful of the pipe for the cooling into glovebox and the light as there a bit of a git if they come apart. Also be careful of the airbag when your poking about under there

Hmmm good idea, surely it's safe to remove the glovebox without the airbag firing though? I suppose I'll find out!

Yeah it's fine but it's better to be cautious around those things

Handy glovebox tips.

1. Empty glovebox completely!! Undo and remove all the obvious torx screws. There are 5.

Pull the passenger seat up close so you can support the glovebox with your knee

if necessary.

2. Support the weight of the glovebox with your knee and right hand. Then, with your

left hand and with the glovebox open remove the end trim piece on the end of the dash.

I can do this without using tools as having the front of the glovebox open you can get

your fingers under it. You may hear a ping as one or two of the metal trim clips go flying .

Keep an eye on where these land as they can be put back into place and reused.

3. Lower the glovebox pulling away gently as you lower, as it comes away you'll see

the connection for the interior lamp and the hose for the air con pipe.

Wiggle the pipe off and unclip the wire from the light. Don't manhandle the light too much

as they are known to spring apart without warning. Just carefully squeeze the tabs and unplug.

On most Fabias the glove box will now come away. But if there's an airbag off keyswitch in there

then read on.

4. Some Fabias have an airbag off switch as well. This can also be unplugged if

absolutely necessary.

(There's a yellow plug in the top of the switch module hidden under carpety stuff but it' s a pig to undo.)

If you want to disconnect this as well, then I'd recommend first disconnecting the battery.

I don't know if it will throw up a fault code or not? And you don't want accidental triggering.

But I've managed to fit a few different hands free kits and replacement head units without fully removing

the glovebox in mine. The wire to it is just about long enough to allow the glovebox to sit in the footwell.

I usually sit it on a small toolbox to avoid pulling on the wires.

5. Run any cables you want to hide across the footwell with a little slack and gather any

excess with cable ties so that the bundles of excess cable are in the middle.

The aim is so that you can 'hook' the wires with the furry soundproofed flat panel on the

rear of the glovebox as it goes back into position.

I had this spot full of wires and hands free kits and it never moved at all.

Run any other cables to go into glovebox, (like usb for example) out to the left

of the console following the route of the wire for the light.

Usually these cables are pretty long so you should be able to first feed the plug through the

triangle flap mentioned earlier, then pull it through into the glove box as you raise it back into place.

6. Once you're happy, keeping the glovebox door open again (Easier to handle with 1 hand/arm)

lift it back into position ensuring the extra wiring to the rear is sitting across the soundproofing.

When it's up far enough to reach push the A/C hose back on and clip the light connection back in

also pull your usb cable through a bit. Fully lift it home , support with knee and do up the top right

and bottom left torx screw from the 5 removed earlier. You should be able to move your knee now

and it should hold itself in place.

Do up the remaining 3 screws, replace the metal clips that nearly took your eye out earlier back

into place the side cover, should be obvious where these go.

Refitting the side panel is easy when you know how.

You need to get the front lip tucked right in next to the door seal before thumping

it back home, if you look you can see if the metal clips are over their respective holes before you

**** it one or you risk breaking/bending them. Palm of the hand or bottom of fist should do it.

Hope it's some use to somebody.

Well, I've successfully installed the head unit, microphone and USB cable thanks to all the helpful comments on this thread. It was fairly straight forward with the right information. I placed the mic on the drivers side A pillar in the end. Not a wire to be seen either!

Thanks for all the help guys!!!

Nice one mate
