Clutch again this time it's gone :(

Featured Replies

Ok so I put a thread up here over the weekend regarding my clutch pedal staying on the floor but when I pulled it back up it seemed fine thought I was a lucky guy.........but now it has happened again and the pedal has no resistance and just stays at the bottom when pressed also it has dropped all it's fluid (I'm guessing clutch fluid) what could this be now it has finally gone? Also is the clutch fluid topped up in the same place as the brake fluid?

Thanks guys Chris

yes topped up same place. Sounds like master cylinder failure matey

Could be the slave cylinder mate , but I'am no mechanic.

Is it a hydraulic or cable clutch on the MK1?? I can't remember :/

Could just be new cable if it's the latter

Damn I take it that's the expensive one lol? But isn't it the slave cylinder that pushes the pedal back up well keeps its resistance?

That last reply was for lofty lol but im Hoping it's the slave cylinder......any ways of checking?

there would be fluid dripping out from between gearbox and engine or around top of gearbox itself. Where is the fluid escaping from?

Not too expensive and you could do it yourself if you have a moderate skill set

The fluid does seem to be coming from the gearbox to engine place as you say but I can't tell for sure as its gone everywhere lol but the handbrake warning light kept flashing and beeping at me if that helps :/

Iv had a few where the clip goes on the joiner/flex pipe for the clutch release bearing and it just pops the pipe off? If so bending the clips ends in and refitting/bleeding it up. It's the pipe that kind of looks like a hose pipe fitting (release bearing) and the joiner has a little bleed nipple on the top.

But as lofty79 said if its coming between the gearbox then it could be bearing failure :(

thatll be fluid low alert i would think. If its coming from there i would say slave cylinder. You will find it on top of the gearbox near the linkeage, follow the pipe down to it. Not sure of type but if its the integrated bearing type, i think its box off?

NOTE: If your fluid has run too low you must also bleed the nipples near the resevoir aswell

Speedy is thus pipe you'r talking about at the top of the gear box near the gear selector cables?

Ok lofty so the best place to start well from what Iv read is there is like a bleed nipple with what looks to be a valve cap from your wheels on it at the top of the gear box near the gear selector linkages I just follow that under do I?

sorry i remember now, if its concentric slave cylinder it can be more of an issue than the normal bolt in type. Whats the engine code mate? asv?

Damn I'm not sure it's an 05 plate buddy....don't know if this will help but the car got stuck in 6th gear and was still ok driving with no clutch slip at all??? Don't know if that will help

i suspect being 2005 its the concentric one.

I take it this is just anove the starter motor? But il get it on ramps tomorrow night about 6ish that way I can properly check as its in works car park at the mo this is a message for lofty you wouldn't be able to pm me your number seen as you know a bit about this and j could maybe give you a call tomorrow with more info because at the moment all I can see is a bleed nipple with what looks to be a pipe leading off the back of it under the air box :/ cheers mate

I think it's concentric too mate to be honest

If its concentric then its same labour as a new clutch, and you are as well just to replace clutch while in there anyway. Although 05 was changeover for these cylinders so if it isn't concentric it'll be 20 quid and 20 minutes. A photo of the bleed nipple and the surrounding area would be handy, I can pm you my number and you could mms one. There are folk in here who's knowledge far exceeds that of my own, so keep reading others suggestions pal.

Oh and your welcome to phone me (as long as there's no heavy breathing or the like)
