Pad and polish for removing scratches and swirls, 9inch makita

Featured Replies

Hi guys, quick q. Just heading into town going to buy a foam polishing pad for my makita rotary, do i get a soft or hard pad. How about poor boys ssr1. The shop im going to stock a lot of pb and meguire product.

I would be buying several grades, from medium cutting pads to the final finish ones. Not all scratches/panels will require the same level of cutting and its always safer to try with the lightest cutting pads first. Imo. :)

Ok picked up a soft meguires pad, got it home and it doesn't quite fit my backing plate, it does stick but its a little small.

Not sure how big the backing plate is either need to measure but I thought these things would be standard sizes.

Anyway I tried it on my roof with my poor boys polish with sealant, it didn't seem to take any of the scratches out but it did come up nice and glossy.

Should I maybe try some ssr 1 cutting compound?

Try it with the cutting compound, if it still doesn't help will need to get a more aggressive pad I guess.

Dependent on how deep your scratches are you may well struggle with SSR1 with any compounding pad on VAG paintwork as it's very tough........:(

You may need to think about investing in something a little more aggressive but you will need to ensure you refine afterwards so that no buffer trails are left.........:)

Brasso wadding is great for smalls scratches. Don't use the liquid stuff or Silvio!

On paintwork?

Managed to clean up most of my swirls with a very light cutting pad and a fairly light menzerna polish. Though they were not deep.
