Anyone got cat vision from a superb/W8?

Featured Replies

Had my Superb interior light with cat vision fitted for a while now and last night I noticed that when you press either one of the individual reading light buttons on the unit, the whole bar of 4 bulbs lights up instead of just the end one, but if you have them both pressed in, just the two end ones are on. Bloke at work has just bought an 07 plate Superb so though i'd check his to make sure and it definitely is just the end reading light on the respective side that should be coming on when a button is pressed.

The large switch regulating 'on/off/on when doors are open' work fine.

Has anyone else got this mod and do they have the same issue, or are they working as they should be? Wondering if I need to rewire something i've missed or if the unit's faulty.

Not seen this, when I test fitted the Passat W8 version.

With yours did you face any issues installing that with the connector fouling the sunglasses holder?

With the Passat version, this final step stopped me in my tracks. Only option I can see is to make modifications to the connector and plastic surrounding it, in order to fit.

Ah, mine's slightly different in that it has the dial to operate the sunroof, but it DID fould the sunglasses holder. However I got round that by cutting down the plastic socket, removing/unsoldering the pins and hardwiring the wires directly onto the board, only leaving the 2 connectors for the power and dimmer on the other end, thus...

Principal's the same though.

Admittedly on the Superb there's actually SIX connectors, but as far as I can tell, there's no other way of wiring it up for an octavia and even on the Seat forums, the wiring is the same. Just can't work out why it's doing what it's doing unless everyone else's is doing the same due to the wiring??

Got you. That's exactly what I need to do for mine, to get it fitted. Fancy another one to do?? :)

I loose confidence at the solder/unsolder stage!

Don't remember that number of connectors on the Passat version though - what does it need 6 connections for I wonder?

If you wanna post it back & forth i'll do it if you want, but I have no idea if it'll work like mine or what I would assume is properly. Do you have the loom cos i've got enough to do another full unit but no-one's really doing this mod at the moment so no-one needs it to buy it off me.

Cheers, might take you up on that.

Yep, I'm all good to go. Had wired everything in, hooked it upto the headlight switch etc - so it was quite annoying when I found I couldn't get it to fit! Tested all the functions and the downlighting, so can tell you on mine it didn't show the same symptoms yours does.

That's quite annoying. Can you confirm from your loom that you have it wired the same wayand the wiring is correct (there're little numbers on the looms themselves on mine but it marries up with what's on the picture pretty easily if you're looking at it all together):

1 - Blue/Grey goes to headlight switch

2 - blank

3 - Position 1 on the Octavia connector (Brown/White on mine)

4 - Position 3 on the Octavia connector (Brown on mine, presumably the earth)

5 - Position 2 on the Octavia connector (Blue/Red on mine)

6 - blank

(numbered the picture above to make it more obvious)

OK, will check. Would have thought it's the same though.

Bought the loom ready-made, can't remember from who now. I've had it ages as was going to put it in my last Fabia, so it's sat on the 'to-do' list for at least 2 years!

There's a seller on ebay that does loads of them and that's where most people seem to get them. Just found it a lot cheaper to make my own with parts from the dealer.

There's a possibility that it's something to do with mine having the sunroof switch as well as I appear to be the only person on here who's done it with that type unit. It's not horrendous if that's that, would just like it to do what it was originally designed to do if possible as a nicety.

Think it might have been a guy on E38. Don't remember getting the bits from eBay.

You could well be right with the fact it's the sunroof version, as that's the only logical difference. How does the control for the sunroof connect? Is it all via the standard connector?

Been checking all over the place and it very much looks like there's only one way of wiring it, as I've done it, and they're all wired up the same regardless of whether it has a sunroof or not so I have no idea why mine is doing what it's doing, but i'd have thought if it was because it was buggered then they wouldn't work full stop, not that they'd ALL come on.

It's really bizarre!

To be honest, i've never actually used the reading lights, but it's nice to have something work as it's supposed to.

Must admit though, that now i've looked at it and studied the tracks, I'm very confident that I could change every single led in the unit to whatever switch colour is required as I can see that they'll all drop out once you unsolder them and it would simply be a case of soldering new leds in. It'd solve the problem of getting a pre-sprayed black W8 unit to match the vrs roof interior and it not being the right colour switch lighting quite easily.

Mine's a matching grey one out of a superb though so I don't need to!

Had a chat with my mate who is an electronics GENIUS and he's gonna have a look at it next week when i'm passing his gaff. It's definitely the light unit cos I tried my original unit and it all works fine. He reckons probably there's either an open circuit or one of the resistors is blown (of which there's only 4 so not difficult to track).

On another note, I tried finding out from Skoda what the six pins/wires in the superb unit all do and it's almost impossible trying to find it out! In the old days when I was running VW's, this sort of stuff was easy as pie to look up on the system, B@stards! I know the Octavia connector's three wires are earth (brown) and the other two are permanent live and switched live, but don't know which is which...
