Locking wheel nuts

Featured Replies

I noticed a month ago just after I picked up my car that there is not a code for the locking nut pattern. On my old car it was in a plastic bag with the locking nut adapter so if you ever lost it you could get a new one without changing the nuts on the car. I phoned the dealer and asked about it and was told that if I ever lost it they have a 'master key' that can take off the locking nuts (probably a big rod that they weld on to the nut). No big rod jokes please :giggle:

So basicly my question is, is this true or are they just fobbing me off because they lost the bit of paper with the code on it?

When I had to get a replacement locking bolt the dealer didn't need any code to order it for me.

I swapped to an after market set of McGard Ultras

if they are dealer ones they should be able to get them for you, if they are aftermarket its harder to fsorce the correct socket so they use an extraction tool. a giant socket with inverted coil inside that grips the outer part of the nut and simply undoe them then replace, you can buy your own extractor for around £5 but get a decent 1 that wont break after removing the first nut, about £20

hope that helps

Seems a bit pointless having locking wheel nuts if you can get an extraction tool for £20!

The code is simply the double digit number stamped on the head of the socket. Incidentally, the code is also stamped on the end of the wheel bolts. Of course you can't see that without taking the bolt off.

Dealers have the master keys for the major locking wheel nut manufacturers...

Thanks for clearing that up guys.

I've got McGard Ultras. They have a rotating tungsten collar on the top of the bolt to make it much harder to hammer on a socket and just turn it off.

Keys are easy to break though but it's not too hard to order a replacement from Germany.

They have a special kit to buy in the event the McGards are stuck but I've no idea how it works.

I know that in croydon the wheels for focus st's were being nicked off of the cars. The thieves were just undoing the 4 non locking nuts and snapping the locking nut by pulling the wheel off at the opposite side shearing the locking nut. This was about a year ago tho so I dont know if it still happens.

i think its rare now but like stu said st wheels are sort ofter, we had a spell round here where people where just robbing ST centre caps and after looking on ebay seeing they sell for around £50 a set. For 2mins work with a flat head screw driver i suppose its very tempting for the crim's
